Enoshima Island lies off the coast of Japan's largest island (Honshu), just south of Tokyo and Yokohama. The island is a popular tourist destination thanks to it's sandy beaches, but was once a sanctuary for Benzaiten, the Buddhist goddess of music. Fire. Floods. Earthquake. Tornados. Chemical disasters.
It is overwhelming to consider the possibility of these catastrophic events, but as the caretakers of important collections, archivists and librarians must make a plan. Luckily, there are an abundance of models and example disaster plans that one can consult. What follows is a guideline of basics to consider when making a disaster plan as well as links to useful websites that will assist in creating your plan.
To make the UB Stat 3 and UB Stat 5 report a more valuable collection development tool, CARLI is adding a normalized title field (NORMAL_HEADING_2450) to the monthly results, beginning with the April 2017 data. The NORMAL_HEADING_2450 field makes it possible for library staff to compare requested titles with your library’s collection using newly developed shared SQL.

CARLI has written a new report, “UB Stat 6: All Requests.” This report lists all of the titles that your patrons requested to borrow through I-Share during a date range.
A new webpage,UB Stat 6: All Requests, Import Directions, contains a more complete explanation of this report, including step-by-step import directions for Microsoft Excel or Access, considerations for data analysis, and links to shared SQL for request/collection review.
Known among deltiologists for pioneering linen postcards and popularizing the large letter style, Curt Teich & Company was a postcard manufacturer in Chicago from 1898 to 1978.
Each year CARLI has a number of opportunities to serve on various committees. Service on CARLI committees affords individuals a unique opportunity to use their experience and expertise to help shape the future of the consortium and its services. CARLI is now seeking volunteers to serve on nine advisory committees. Volunteers chosen will serve a three-year term, July 1, 2017 through June 30, 2020. Faculty and staff members from all CARLI member libraries, with all levels of experience, are encouraged to apply.

Avery Brooks, known to some as Captain Benjamin Sisko from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, is seen reading from Henry Dumas' Goodbye, Sweetwater. Dumas was involved with Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's Upward Bound program, and worked with Eugene Redmond, distinguished Emeritus Professor of English at SIUE and poet of the Black Arts Movement. Dumas died in 1968 at the age of 33, shot to death by New York City Transit Police.
CARLI is seeking nominations for candidates to fill seats on the CARLI Board of Directors. The Board of Directors is the governing authority of the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois.
CARLI Governing Members will elect one Board member from each of three (3) specified constituencies (public universities, community colleges, and private colleges and universities). Candidates receiving the most votes will serve three (3) year terms, July 1, 2017 through June 30, 2020.
