CONTENTdm Upgrade Announcement

Summary:

At 5:00pm on Tuesday, June 23, 2015, CARLI will begin upgrading the server software running CARLI Digital Collections from CONTENTdm version 5.4 to version 6.10.  We expect the process to be completed no later than Sunday, June 28, 2015.

This upgrade will provide new features to the public interface of CONTENTdm, but Project Clients and most staff procedures for adding materials will remain the same.

For further information and links to documentation and release notes on CONTENTdm version 6, see http://www.carli.illinois.edu/products-services/contentdm/cdm-upgrade.

Details:

Before the upgrade of CARLI’s CONTENTdm server:

  • All digital items must be uploaded to the server from all Projects in all Project Clients on your local PCs and approved and indexed in CONTENTdm Web Administration by 5pm on June 23, 2015.
  • Any digital items that are not uploaded to the server by 5pm on June 23 may be lost.
  • After the upgrade is complete, digital items can be downloaded back into the Project Client for additional editing.

During the migration and upgrade of CARLI’s CONTENTdm server:

  • No new digital items can be added to existing collections.
  • No changes can be made to existing digital items.
  • No new collections can be created in CARLI Digital Collections.
  • Currently unpublished existing collections cannot change from unpublished to published, but unpublished collections will not be lost.  They will be available for publishing after the upgrade.
  • No changes can be made to collection home pages.
  • A read-only copy of CARLI Digital Collections will be available for searching and viewing items at http://collections.carli.illinois.edu.  It will contain all items and metadata as of 5:00pm on Tuesday, June 23, 2015.

After the upgrade of CARLI’s CONTENTdm server:

  • The public URL for CARLI Digital Collections, http://collections.carli.illinois.edu, will remain the same.
  • There will not be new Project Client software to install, but library staff will need to make a one-time change to the server URL used by their existing Project Clients after the upgrade has been completed.  Step-by-step instructions for making this change are available on the CONTENTdm Upgrade web page
  • This change will need to be made before work can resume in the Project Client, but need not necessarily occur on June 29 if staff are not actively working with the Project Client until a later date.
  • Library staff will also need to update their Internet browser bookmarks for CONTENTdm Web Administration.  More information is available on the CONTENTdm Upgrade web page
  • This change will need to be made before work can resume in CONTENTdm Web Administration, but need not necessarily occur on June 29 if staff are not actively working in Web Administration until a later date.
  • In the new version of the CONTENTdm software, internal URLs for collection home pages and items will change, but there are automatic address redirects in place within the software to accommodate this.  Libraries will be able to update any links into CONTENTdm that appear on their local webpages over time.  The CONTENTdm Reference URL for each item does not change.  More information is available on the CONTENTdm Upgrade web page
