Description of CARLI Commons on LibreTexts

The CARLI Commons on LibreTexts facilitates the use of Open Educational Resources (OER) and supports training, advocacy, and coordination of cooperative efforts for the benefits of the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI).

The site is a customized, branded resource on LibreText's platform where CARLI Members can create and share resources and have an institutional presence to share resources.

What is LibreTexts?

LibreTexts is a non-profit open education resource platform that allows educators to create, customize, and share accessible, interactive textbooks and ancillary materials.

LibreTexts is organized into:

  • Libraries (Subjects, K-12, or Spanish/Global Languages)
  • Campus Bookshelves (institutional-specific for faculty created resources)
  • Bookshelves (where books are stored on the site)
  • Learning Objects (secondary section of the site that contains all material other than books)

LibreTexts has interconnected areas of the site. There are several sections of the platform.

Content on LibreTexts

Content on the LibreTexts site is from faculty creating original material and resources that the LibreTexts staff add to the site by harvesting existing OER content from other sites. Additionally, content may be a mix of both newly created content and existing (harvested) resources.

Getting Started with LibreTexts: Conductor and the Libraries

Recording

CARLI has a recorded session on Getting Started with LibreTexts: Conductor and the Libraries, that includes setting up your account and how to navigate the site, locate materials, and set up a project.

Creating an Account on LibreTexts

To use LibreTexts to create content, you first should create an account on the site.

Creating content on LibreTexts

Western Technical College has created an online resource that walks you through creating your OER Using the LibreTexts Platform.

Using LibreTexts to Remix, Adapt, and Create OER

Recording

CARLI has a recorded session on Using LibreTexts to Remix, Adapt, and Create OER that demonstrates some of the uses of LibreTexts Conductor for project planning and management. This session also includes getting started on remixing, adapting, or creating your OER project.

Using Resources Found on the LibreTexts

Resources found on LibreTexts have a license. The license allows the user to know how the resource can be used. Most licenses are from Creative Commons. You can learn more about Creative Commons on their website, and the CARLI OER Committee has created a page about using Creative Commons.

You can also integrate OER found on LibreTexts into your campus Learning Management System.
