Public Services Committee Open House: Makerspaces at Univ. of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

Friday, March 17, 2017 - 9:00am to 2:30pm

The CARLI Public Services Committee is pleased to sponsor an Open House at two makerspace labs that are on the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus.

The Open House will include tours of:

  • Illinois MakerLab:
    • The Illinois MakerLab is the world’s first Business School 3D Printing Lab. It opened in Spring 2013.  Their objective is to provide faculty and students with the knowledge and resources to be at the forefront of the emerging maker movement by teaching users how to design, manufacture, and market physical objects.  The lab is equipped with 17 Ultimaker desktop 3D printers, 3D design software, and 3D scanning devices.
  • CU Community Fab Lab:
    • Physically, our Fab Lab is an advanced workshop space for rapid prototyping and computer-based design. It is also comprised of a network of a number of smaller mini or mobile fab lab spaces.
    • Culturally, the CUC Fab Lab is driven by a community of practice, people often referred to as Makers.
    • Functionally, Fab Labs encourage people to become makers by exploring the entire design process.
    • Organizationally, our Fab Lab is a public engagement program of the Illinois Informatics Institute.
    • Philosophically, we believe the open source ethos of the Fab Lab inspires interest and innovation in many fields.

CARLI will provide box lunches (sandwich, side, cookie) and a drink for lunch.

The intended audience is staff and librarians from member libraries.

Parking: Parking on the University of Illinois campus can be difficult. Please allow yourself an additional 30-40 minutes to locate a parking spot and make your way to the Main Library. All lots noted in yellow on the parking map have some meters with longer times. There are also some day meters on the first floor of the UIUC parking deck noted as C7 on the map.

Meters: Within the “University Parking District,” there are meters from the University of Illinois, the City of Champaign, and the City of Urbana. They all have logos indicating their affiliation: Meters. The U of I meters are $1 an hour. U of I meters have limits on the length of time you can park in the spot (30 minutes, 2 hours, 8 hours, and 10 hours). If you park in a metered spot, make certain it is an 8 or 10 hour meter as the shorter-timed meters have the expectation that you will move your car when the time expires. There is a Pay by phone option for U of I meters. If you are interested in this option, please install the app prior to arriving on campus. Otherwise, please bring enough change to pay for parking for the entire day at a meter.

Accessible parking spaces: Anyone with a vehicle displaying a valid state disability placard or plate may park in one of the five designated accessible parking spaces in Lot E3 on the west side of the Main Library. These are metered parking spaces.

Non-U of I Parking Option: JSM Management operates the Campus Center Public Parking Deck at 509 E Healey Street, Champaign, IL 61820. The Parking Deck is approximately .75 mile from the Library. This is a four-level, automated parking deck with plenty of parking available. Accessible parking spaces are located near the south entrance on each level. Upon your departure you will enter your ticket into the machine, and then make a payment using credit or cash. Hourly parking is available at the following rates:

  • 1 – 7 hours @ $1 per hour
  • 8 – 12 hours @ $8 flat rate
  • 12 – 24 hours @ $10 flat rate

Parking at CARLI (for free) and taking Public Transportation to Campus: Participants may park at the CARLI Office for free and take a bus to the Main Library.

  • Directions to CARLI Office
  • Parking Map: Participants may park in either spots noted on the map as CARLI or in the spaces with no affiliation noted.
  • Bus Map: The bus route to campus is 10E Gold route. It can be pick up near Kirby & State at sign saying “MTD…” at the top of the hour or at half hour east bound. A standard ride costs $1, one-way, with free transfers from route-to-route. Only coins and $1 bills accepted.  If you prefer to walk, the distance is 1.3 miles, estimated time 30 minutes.

Registration: To Register, please click the "Register" Tab above.  Due to space limitations, only one person per CARLI member institution will be allowed to register – on a first come, first register basis. All registrants will be placed on a waitlist as the registration system does not filter by institution.  You will be notified via email if you are registered or if you remain on the waitlist due to space considerations.

If space remains after March 1st, registration will be open to all interested CARLI members.

Registration deadline: Friday, March 10, 2017 at noon.
