E-Resources Updates

Calendar Year 2022 Selection Cycle

We plan to open the selection system for CY21 subscription commitments around October 11. It will remain open until about November 5. Libraries will be advised of any date changes throughout this period.

Many vendors are keeping pricing flat due to continued economic uncertainty for CY22.

CARLI's OER Commons Hub: Open Illinois

CARLI is pleased to launch the Open Illinois Hub on OER Commons.

The Open Illinois Hub facilitates the use of Open Educational Resources (OER) and supports training, advocacy, and coordination of cooperative efforts for the benefit of members of the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI), and other Illinois stakeholders. This centralized repository provides materials helpful to academic and research institutions in developing OER and advocating for adoption of OER on their campuses to reduce students' costs.

The Open Illinois Hub is a customized, branded resource on OER Commons where our network of users can create and share their locally created open educational resources and collections, have an institutional presence, or work collaboratively, and share news and events associated with a project or organization.

By combining resources from many CARLI member institutions into a seamless environment, faculty, staff, students, and the public are able to search across Illinois institutions and collections.

What is OER Commons?

OER Commons is a digital public library and collaborative platform launched in 2007 by ISKME (an independent, education nonprofit). It provides a comprehensive infrastructure to identify high-quality OER and provides the space for collaboration during the creation or the adaption of open educational resources.

Is there a cost for CARLI members to use OER Commons?

There is no cost for CARLI Governing Members.

How can my library get involved?

Governing members may have an institutional group on the Open Illinois Hub or form collaborative working groups, by submitting a form from the CARLI OER Commons Hub.

Save the Date: October 27, 2-3 p.m.

Please save the date for a brief overview of CARLI's OER Commons Hub: Open Illinois. You will learn more about OER Commons, CARLI's Hub, and how your institution can have presence on the site. Registration information will be available soon.

Alma Primo VE Update

CARLI has contracted with the Illinois Heartland Library System's Catalog Maintenance Center to employ three catalogers from September 2021 through June 2022 to assist the CARLI Office staff and I-Share member library staff in identifying duplicate titles and consolidating these records where appropriate. The three cataloging positions are being supported through a University of Illinois System Office internal special funding initiative program. These catalogers will be IHLS employees with a reporting line to CARLI Office staff.

The IHLS team began work on September 21, 2021 and have spent their first week on the job following the Ex Libris online Alma training and doing practice work in our Alma sandbox test environments. The IHLS staff are all experienced catalogers, and their work will focus on the three major priorities that we have identified in title reduction: 1) Consolidating title records that are duplicated in I-Share Alma institutions zones (IZ's) and the I-Share network zone (NZ) to the NZ record; 2) Eliminating bib records with no inventory; and 3) Eliminating duplicate bib records.

We created some new CARLI webpages to provide I-Share libraries with background, documentation, and resources related to the title reduction project.

CARLI /IHLS staff are now starting them on the first task in this project, which is a consolidation of free and open access e-resources from the IZ's to a shared network zone (NZ) record. We found that 59 of the 89 I-Share libraries had some of the free and open access collections that are in the I-Share NZ duplicated in their IZ. The other 30 I-Share libraries did not have any of the NZ free resources in their IZ at this time. We surveyed the 59 institutions with these duplicated collections as to whether they would like the CARLI team to do this work on their behalf, and at this writing, 23 institutions have asked CARLI to do the work, 22 have indicated they will do the work themselves by October 8, and we are waiting on responses from the rest. Please note that there is no cost to the library to have the CARLI/IHLS team do this work for you.

This title reduction project is focused on getting rid of duplicate data, where possible, so that we can best manage our Alma costs as the title count is a metric that Ex Libris uses in Alma pricing. We are not asking I-Share libraries to limit adding new materials to your collections. Our large and broad consortial collection is one of CARLI's greatest assets and its ongoing growth directly benefits our students and faculty.

Reminders:

Monthly software updates return in October after Ex Libris took a month off from software changes in September to focus on their cloud infrastructure. The October release will be on Sunday October 3.

If you do cataloging in Alma, please note that the availability of the old "classic" Metadata Editor will end with the October 2021 Alma monthly update on October 3. The October software release will remove the "Switch to old" button in the Alma Metadata Editor and everyone will now need to use the new version.

The next CARLI Alma Primo VE Open Office Hours webinar will be held on Thursday, October 14, from 2-3 pm.

CARLI will hold a special webinar on local requesting (i.e., allowing your patrons to place requests on items held in your collection) on Friday, October 15 from 2–3 p.m. See the CARLI calendar for more information about this session, which will also be recorded.

ILA Call for Proposals

After two years of being apart, the hope is to meet in-person at the 2022 Reaching Forward Conference on Friday, May 6. However, if having an in-person meeting is not possible, Reaching Forward will pivot to a virtual conference. A decision will be made by January 31, 2022.

The Reaching Forward Forum is accepting program proposals for 2022. They want to hear how you and your libraries responded to the pandemic and how you are looking toward the future. What has worked? What new and innovative projects and procedures have you implemented? Where do we go from here? We’ve all learned a lot. Please share your challenges and successes.

Note:

•    Honoraria will not be available due to the impact of Covid-19.
•    Proposals can be edited after submission. You will receive an email with a link to your submission portal.

The deadline for proposal submission is Monday, November 22, 11:59 p.m.
