Very often administrators ask us to gather data for them and report on library usage metrics. Sometimes those metrics make a lot of sense… other times not so much! Please join the CARLI Resource Sharing Committee discussion about reports we find useful to run as well as reports we've been asked to run of questionable use. This discussion hosted by the CARLI Resource Sharing Committee is not intended to help you learn how to run reports, but rather, to generate discussion and creativity about the information we gather and whether it actually answers the questions our administrations think that it answers.
Registration for this event is required.
CARLI E-Resources staff will be opening our new tool, Consortia Manager, for libraries to make their calendar year selections around October 7 and plan to close on November 15.
Information will be sent soon about setting up accounts in Consortia Manager, as well as training on how to use the system.
E-resources staff are busy working with Sage on a new Sage Journal Contract. They are also in the preliminary stages of negotiation with Mometrix for their online test library. Third Iron is currently going through the sole source process with the state, and we hope to have more information soon.
CARLI Counts, a continuing education library leadership immersion program that prepares librarians to make effective use of research findings on the impact of academic libraries on student success for the twin purposes of service development and library advocacy, will once again be offered to our members in 2025. Application materials will be available soon!
Program participants learn how to use local library data analytics in alignment with institutional data, goals, and strategic priorities to improve their services and demonstrate their value. CARLI Counts deliverables will include a portfolio of local case studies, an evaluation of the collective statewide impact of those cases, and a replicable state/regional training model for equipping librarians to be campus leaders in assessing library impact on student learning and success, all of which has been made openly available to anyone that wants to offer their own program. You can find all the materials on the CARLI Counts Curriculum Guide page.
CARLI Counts started as a four-year project funded by an IMLS, Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program grant, has been continued with CARLI funds in partnership with the University of Illinois Library at Urbana-Champaign and Lewis & Clark Community College.
The Archives Task Force is grateful for the response to a previous call for contributions to the web resource repository! The documents and educational materials apply to all institutions, collection sizes and types, and aids CARLI members in assessing, planning, and maintaining archival collections in ways that prioritize both care and access. The received documentation is available on the Archives & Special Collections Resource page.
Please send additional submissions of PDF copies of forms, policies, procedures, and guidelines used in managing archival collections. Materials for all categories under Forms on the Resource Page are welcome, but the focus for this call is on Research and Reading Room:
Let’s learn from each other and build on the existing work of CARLI members! As part of this process, the Task Force will make periodic calls for CARLI members to send in their documentation relating to each topic. The documentation will then be reviewed for possible inclusion in the webliography.
For the guidelines for submitting your forms please see the Archives and Special Collections Resource page.
The CARLI OER Committee is pleased to announce that funding is available to help support CARLI member participation in three certificate programs:

Applicants should be a two-person team consisting of a librarian and teaching faculty member who will complete a nine-week, asynchronous course in the spring of 2025 about the range of open educational practices with modules on the hallmarks of open education, copyright and Creative Commons licensing, the hallmarks of open pedagogy, the benefits and limitations of OEP, accessibility, and student empowerment and agency. Together, the faculty and faculty partner pairs will create an Action Plan, to be implemented the following spring, which seeks to transform learning through the power of open education.
CARLI will support one two-member team from a CARLI member. Acceptance by the OEN is required but does not guarantee CARLI support. The deadline to apply to this program is November 1, 2024.

You have asked an AI generator to create a cat portrait in the style of Picasso, now what? Although sampling the work of others has been a natural part of image creation since humans have communicated through art, new AI tools have complicated that conversation. This workshop will take a behind-the-scenes look at how these tools are built and discuss the ways that people are using AI generated images to create new bodies of work, streamline their research processes, and beautifully muddy current and future copyright waters. You will learn your rights as an image creator, and hopefully have a few more answers about where the machine's art ends and yours begins. No prior experience with AI or code required!
Presenters:
Siobhan McKissic is the Visiting Design & Materials Research Librarian at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Dr. Mary Borgo Ton is an Assistant Professor and Digital Humanities Librarian at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
The CARLI Preservation Committee is thrilled to kick off the 2024-2025 year with a new series. This year the focus will be on preservation-related outreach and engagement in its many forms. We will engage with you, our CARLI members, to learn more about your preservation needs, and share ways that you can reach out to your users and community to spread awareness of library preservation.
2025 marks the 10-year anniversary of the committee's 2015 Preservation Survey, a perfect chance to check in with CARLI members to learn more about our institutions' biggest preservation needs and see what has changed in the past decade. A revised survey will be launched to learn more about the preservation work at our member institutions and will use the survey data to inform our work and plan effective programming and projects.
The committee is also planning several opportunities to talk directly with CARLI members. Keep an eye out for registration information about our Ask a Preservation Expert virtual office hours, where committee members will be on hand to answer questions, offer advice, and share resources. The first session will be November 6 at 1:00 p.m., with a second session to be scheduled in the spring. Committee members will also attend the CARLI Annual Meeting this fall, and we look forward to meeting some of you in person.
In addition to articles about the new Preservation Survey, keep an eye out for tips and tricks to engage your community in preservation. We will share tips for hosting the ever-popular "Caring for Your Family Heirlooms" style workshops, ideas for fun preservation-related crafts, suggestions for promoting care and handling in an academic library setting, and ways to promote your collections through exhibits and displays.
Do not forget to check out our Preservation Resources page, where you will find tons of links to helpful information and resources, as well as the Preservation Committee's previous projects.
Do you have questions about the best way to store and preserve your institution's collections? Join the CARLI Preservation Committee for Ask a Preservation Expert virtual office hour on Wednesday, November 6 at 1:00 p.m. Committee members will be on hand.
Don′t have a specific question? You are still welcome to join the session and hear what other CARLI members want to know.
Please register to attend.

Please see the announcement for general guidance about submissions.
