The CMC is hoping to continue these informal meetings over the course of the next year to engage people working in collection management in informal networking and sharing on a variety of topics of interest in these difficult times.

Survey Invitation: Perceived Value of Cataloging in Identifying Resources for Students

Attention reference and instruction librarian staff! The CARLI Counts Technical Services team is investigating how you perceive the value of enhanced cataloging upon the process of identifying resources for a student and they need your input. Please take about 10 minutes of your time to fill out their survey, "Perceived Value of Cataloging in Identifying Resources for Students". This team of librarians is part of the second cohort of CARLI Counts, a three-year project funded by an IMLS grant that prepares academic librarians to make effective use of research findings on the impact of student success.

You are being invited to participate in a survey research study. Your participation is voluntary. You may withdraw at any time without penalty.

Project Title: Perceived Value of Cataloging in Identifying Resources for Students

Principal Investigator: Tammie Busch, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville
Co-Investigators: Mary Konkel, College of Dupage; Susan Howell, Southern Illinois University Carbondale; Mingyan Li, University of Illinois at Chicago; Ross Taft, Illinois State Library; Cathy Mayer, Lake Forest College; and Dennis Krieb, Lewis & Clark Community College

The purpose of this survey is to assist a team of technical services librarians in investigating how reference and instruction librarians and staff perceive the value of enhanced cataloging upon the process of identifying resources for a student. This team of librarians is part of the second cohort of CARLI Counts, a three-year project funded by an IMLS grant that prepares academic librarians to make effective use of research findings on the impact of student success. This survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete.

Potential Risks: It is expected that participation in this study will provide you with no more than minimal risk or discomfort which means that you should not experience it as any more troubling than your normal daily life. While there are no direct benefits to participating, your response will help us to better understand the research topic.

Potential Benefits: The survey results will help librarians and staff with cataloging responsibilities better understand what bibliographic information is most helpful to reference and instruction librarians and staff in locating resources for students. The study results will also help librarians and staff with cataloging duties learn what bibliographic information they should prioritize when cataloging resources.

Confidentiality: CARLI Counts will not be collecting any personal information for the study. All responses to this survey are anonymous and confidential. Your name or identity will not be linked in any way to the research data. If you have any questions about your rights or any other concerns, you may contact the SIUE Institutional Review Board at (618) 650-3010 or .

Alma Primo VE Update

Even in "normal" years, this is the time of year when we start working with I-Share libraries to help them adjust to holiday and winter break schedules and closures. That work is starting a bit earlier this year with many of our member libraries closing before Thanksgiving and staying closed into 2021. CARLI staff are able to help you adjust your Alma settings to accommodate these schedule changes. Just complete this form describing your changes and the dates they will be effective. We know that some sites don't have their re-opening date set yet, and we can work with you on that as well. Many sites are also unable to participate in AFN resource sharing during this time; we continue to try to keep an updated list of which libraries are, and are not participating. Even if a library is listed as open for service, we continue to encourage you to call the other I-Share library before going or sending users there or if you have any questions about their status.

Also, please remember that turning AFN (Alma resource sharing) off or on does not turn ILDS delivery off or on. If you need to suspend, decrease, or resume your delivery service, please contact your regional library system (IHLS or RAILS) at these email addresses:

The next Alma and Primo VE monthly software updates will be done by Ex Libris in the early hours of Sunday, December 6, 2020. Before each update, Ex Libris posts release notes in their Knowledge Center documenting the changes and fixes coming in the next release. We encourage you to refer to the Alma notes and Primo VE release notes. We also want to remind you that CARLI maintains a selective list of known Alma issues on our website.

As always, should you experience any problems following the update, please report it to .

In September, we informed you that CARLI had bought a block of registrations for ELUNA Learns. We still have some seats available, so here is a reminder about that opportunity:

CARLI has purchased a block of registrations for nine of the Ex Libris Users of North America (ELUNA) online webinar series, ELUNA Learns. These sessions focus on Alma and Primo VE and the recordings are available for a year to those who register. These sessions are normally $25 per person; the CARLI block will be available free to I-Share library staff on a first come first served basis while our supply lasts.

To take advantage of the CARLI purchase, please register by sending a completed copy of our registration form via email to CARLI Support.

CARLI will process your registration with ELUNA. Then ELUNA will follow up with two emails to you:

1) a registration confirmation (ignore the text about how to pay for your registration)
2) a second email from ELUNA with the webinar access credentials (these will be sent approximately 1 day before sessions in the future).

Please note that ELUNA's policy is that these registrations are for one individual only and are not for group use.

Please remember to register through CARLI to take advantage of our group purchase.

Finally, a reminder that our ongoing second and fourth Thursday Open Office Hour webinar schedule is a bit off in November and December with the holidays. Our next Open Office Hour (and the last one for 2020) will be on Thursday, December 10, at 2 p.m. We also continue to offer more topically focused informal webinars to our calendar on a variety of subjects. Please continue to watch your email and the CARLI calendar for other events and learning opportunities.

As we approach Thanksgiving, I’d like to once again thank all of you for your flexibility, creativity, patience, and collaboration that you have shown throughout the entire Alma and Primo VE implementation project in this disruptive and challenging year. We have often said that our libraries are better together, and this year has proven that again. Please stay well, stay safe, and stay in touch.

Preservation Tip: Preservation Snapshot at DePaul University

Nora Gabor, Rare Books Librarian, DePaul University Special Collections and Archives

For 2020-2021, the CARLI Preservation Committee is gathering snapshots from the diverse range of perspectives of CARLI member institutions to explore various responses to the pandemic. With specific institutional action, impacts on preservation practices, and keeping up with developing information, we hope that these snapshots will provide the broadest range of responses to shed some light on how our work can continue as well as to provide a record of how libraries responded during this unprecedented time.

This month, Kyle Henke, Digital Archivist at DePaul University, shares his experience.
