Volunteer for a CARLI Committee

Each year CARLI has a number of opportunities to serve on various committees. Service on CARLI committees affords individuals a unique opportunity to use their experience and expertise to help shape the future of the consortium and its services. CARLI is now seeking volunteers to serve on nine advisory committees. Volunteers chosen will serve a three-year term, July 1, 2018 through June 30, 2021. Faculty and staff members from all CARLI member libraries, with all levels of experience, are encouraged to apply.

To volunteer, please complete the committee volunteer form by April 27. To be considered for appointment, you must fill out the online form, even if you have previously submitted a form, or if you are a current committee member whose term is expiring and you wish to be considered again. CARLI seeks to include as many individuals and institutions as possible in committee service, so committee rosters are limited to one person from any institution, and reappointments are not routinely made.

Forms submitted by April 27 will be considered for initial FY 2019 appointments. The list of all volunteers will be retained until March 1, 2019 and will be used to fill other committee vacancies as they occur.

Individuals accepting appointments to CARLI committees are expected to participate fully and actively in the work of the committee, including regular attendance at meetings and committee-sponsored events held throughout the calendar year. CARLI makes every effort to conduct the majority of committee business using web conferencing technologies or via conference calls. However, committee service may require time and/or travel expenses for one or more in-person meetings each year.

Call for Board of Directors Election Nominations

CARLI is seeking nominations for candidates to fill seats on the CARLI Board of Directors. The Board of Directors is the governing authority of the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois.

CARLI Governing Members will elect one Board member from each of three (3) specified constituencies (public universities, community colleges, and private colleges and universities). Candidates receiving the most votes will serve three (3) year terms, July 1, 2018 through June 30, 2021.

Only the director of a CARLI Governing Member institution is eligible to serve on the Board of Directors. The director is defined as the person who is operationally responsible for the staff, services, and budget of the library, with titles that include, but are not limited to, Director, Dean, Chair, or Head Librarian.

Members of the CARLI community may nominate themselves or others (permission of the nominee is required when nominating others) by filling out the online nomination form. 

All nominations will be reviewed and a slate of candidates developed by the CARLI Nominating Committee comprising Jeff Douglas (Knox College), Cate Kaufman (Illinois Central College), Michael Lorenzen (Western Illinois University), Anne Craig (CARLI), and Margaret Chambers (CARLI).

The nomination period will close at 5 p.m., Wednesday, April 4, 2018.

I-Share Now Includes 90 Institutions

CARLI is pleased to announce the addition of four new I-Share institutions:

• Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library, Springfield (a non-circulating collection)
• McHenry County College, Crystal Lake
• Moody Bible Institute, Chicago 
• Spertus Institute for Jewish Learning & Leadership, Chicago

The patrons of these new I-Share libraries are now able to borrow items from other I-Share libraries, either by requesting them remotely, or by visiting other I-Share libraries in person. These four libraries are also filling I-Share call slip requests. Additionally, patrons of other I-Share libraries may now use these libraries on-site and borrow items from their circulating collections.
 
The loading of these libraries' holdings into the I-Share union catalog will begin the week of April 2 and should be completed within two weeks. Once that process is complete, these libraries’ collections will be able to be discovered and requested via the I-Share catalog.

FY19 Selection Cycle Dates

CARLI staff are currently working with fiscal year vendors to prepare for the FY19 selection cycle. Tentative dates for the selection system to be open to libraries are April 9 through May 18. Fiscal year vendors will be offering 33 new products for FY19.

Listening Sessions with CARLI Library Directors

After traveling around the state for several very successful "Listening Sessions" with CARLI library directors last fall, we have scheduled a few more sessions for the spring. These will be informal, approximately two-hour sessions. During these meet-ups CARLI Senior Director, Anne Craig, is eager to hear from each of you about your library's challenges and successes. It is vitally important that we understand your needs and can relate your stories to stakeholders.

Call for Instruction Showcase Proposals

The CARLI Instruction Committee is seeking presentation proposals for the 6th annual Instruction Showcase being held on Thursday, May 31 at Dominican University in River Forest IL.

CARLI members are welcome to submit proposals on all library instruction topics, and encouraged to draw inspiration from the committee's theme this year, "We Can't Do It Alone: Joining Forces for Sustainable Partnerships". Examples related to the theme include instruction sessions that reflect successful collaborations with teaching faculty or that are part of an ongoing instruction initiative. Each breakout room is equipped with a presenter′s station, however, please note that there will not be a computer lab available this year.

Proposals should outline an instruction session activity that supports skills-based or conceptual learning and encourages active student participation. Please include a full lesson plan with your proposal. Attached is a template but feel free to use your preferred format.

All lesson plans must include the following elements: topic, learning objectives, materials, activity overview, assessment of student learning, and applicable knowledge practices and/or dispositions from the Framework for Information Literacy. Presenters will be given 15 minutes to present and five minutes for questions and answers.

If interested, please submit the proposal form no later than Monday, April 2.

Submissions will be reviewed by the CARLI Instruction Committee; notifications will be sent during the week of April 9.

"Promoting Your Digital Collections" Webinar

Join the Created Content Committee for a webinar on promoting your digital collections! Maybe you scanned decades of college yearbooks or the student newspaper, or you digitized a treasure trove of personal letters from a Civil War soldier or historic photographs from your local community. But, once you create these digital collections, how do you connect this unique content to your users or researchers? In this program, panelists Rachel Cole, Lindsay Harmon, and Sara Prescott will discuss strategies for promoting digital collections, from identifying your target audience to sharing content on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Tumblr.

Webinar: "Using Data to Assess and Communicate Improvements in Resource Sharing"

Registration is still open for the upcoming resource sharing webinar: "Using Data to Assess and Communicate Improvements in Resource Sharing" on Thursday, March 29 10:00 –11:00 am.

This webinar will focus on how North Park University (NPU) used data to assess changes in their resource sharing workflows and staffing, and then communicated those changes. Andy Meyer will share how NPU changed their policies to improve their I-Share workflows, how you can use Tableau to explore and assess your data, and some best practices and strategies for communicating data through graphs and visualizations.

Presenter: 
Andy Meyer is the Head of Electronic Resources and Interlibrary Loan at North Park University in Chicago. He holds a Master's degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he earned a specialization in data curation. He is interested in developing and sharing resources that help libraries of all sizes manage and use data, and in improving resource sharing among libraries.

In-Person Workshops from the Open Textbook Network Trainers

Registration is now available to all CARLI members. Registration closes on April 8.

CARLI will be hosting trainers from the Open Textbook Network (OTN) on April 23, 24, and 26 when they give Train-the-Trainer workshops as part of CARLI′ s OTN membership.

These sessions are intended for librarians or library staff who plan to give training sessions at their local institutions. The OTN′ s Train-the-Trainer workshop will increase participants′ familiarity with the nuances related to the issues around open textbook adoption; strengthen presentation capacity for future open textbook workshops; and enhance open textbook program development.

CARLI members are encouraged to bring a local partner with them be it another librarian or library staff member or someone on their campus also involved with OER including but not limited to instructional designers, faculty or campus staff members involved with local OER efforts, or university administrators.

The three sessions will have the same content, so those interested should register for only one workshop.

Faculty Experiences on Teaching with OERs: A Webinar Celebrating Open Education Week 2018

CARLI and The Louisiana Library Network (LOUIS) joined together for an exciting webinar on open educational resources (OER) during Open Education Week 2018.
 
This webinar featured a panel of faculty from Illinois and Louisiana, moderated by Lisa Petrides from ISKME, discussing their experiences in teaching with OER. The webinar is perfect for administrators, faculty, and staff interested in learning more about how open education resources can be incorporated into their courses.

CARLI-OER Email List

CARLI has established an email list for CARLI members to discuss and learn more about Open Educational Resources. The Open Textbook Network encourages consortia to establish a local email list to support the community of people that are working with open educational resources. Any person from a CARLI institution may subscribe to the email list.

ACRL Scholarly Communication RoadShow: From Understanding to Engagement

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and CARLI are pleased to host the full-day ACRL Roadshow - Scholarly Communication: From Understanding to Engagement on May 4 at the I Hotel in Champaign, Illinois.

This all-day workshop will be led by Scholarly Communication RoadShow instructors Carla Myers, Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Scholarly Communications at Miami University Libraries, and Rachael G. Samberg, Scholarly Communication Officer at the University of California at Berkeley.

The day begins with an overview of scholarly communication fundamentals including open access, copyright, and library engagement.

For the afternoon sessions, the expert presenters will offer a deep dive into the following specific areas:

• Institutional Repositories
• Open Education
• Outreach and Programming

This one-day workshop will be provided to attendees free of cost and lunch will be provided. 

The workshop is appropriate for those with administrative responsibilities, with new leadership assignments in scholarly communication or digital publishing, as well as liaisons and any others who are seeking to advance their professional development in scholarly communication. CARLI member libraries are especially invited to attend.

This is the final week to register for the event.

ACRL Framework Workshop

Illinois Wesleyan University, Illinois State University, and CARLI are partnering to bring the Engaging with the ACRL Framework Workshop to Normal on May 14. This one-day workshop focuses on engaging more deeply with the Framework and exploring ways that it may help to enrich individual teaching practices, as well as their local instruction programs and institutions. Throughout this workshop participants will explore concepts and pedagogical approaches outlined in the Framework and their significance to their own instructional work. Attendees will apply their learning and reflection to creating instruction plans for their local contexts and considering possibilities for growing teaching partnerships. The workshop will be led by Jenny Dale (University of North Carolina at Greensboro) and Kate L. Ganski (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee).

Cohorts from the same institution are encouraged to attend and work together on their information literacy curriculum.

Illinois Fire Service Institute Burn Simulation and Recovery Workshop

The CARLI Preservation Committee is sponsoring a Burn Simulation and Recovery Workshop on Wednesday, June 13, 2018, from 8:30 am–4:15 pm. The workshop will be held at the Illinois Fire Services Institute, 11 Gerty Drive, Champaign.  

This workshop will include presentations by a fire professional, hands-on fire extinguisher training, burn simulation, and practice recovery of library materials. Jennifer Teper, Bud Velde Preservation Librarian and Head of Preservation Services at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will lead the salvage and recovery discussion and exercise.

FY18 Collaborative Collection Development

The CARLI Collection Management Committee (CMC) is pursuing ways that CARLI members can work together to enhance the statewide collection. All members are encouraged to participate in the following projects as they are able.

Purchasing Consortial eBooks

The CARLI Collection Management Committee encourages all CARLI Governing members to purchase at least two eBooks to expand and update the shared consortial eBook collection that was first purchased for the 2014 CARLI eBook Pilot Project and expanded in 2017 following last year′s CMC encouragement to ″buy two″.

Thank you to the 21 CARLI members that have already "bought two" (or more) ebooks for the consortial collection.

All Governing members will have perpetual access to the titles purchased by libraries through this contract, as well as to the 3,936 titles already purchased by CARLI through the pilot project and by members following the last CMC request.
 
For the terms of the contract, interested libraries should contact the CARLI office. 
 
CARLI and the CMC learned from the 2017 project, that not all eBook titles are available for consortial purchase. With that in mind, the CMC has updated the procedures to purchase an eBook for the consortium.
 
To order an eBook for CARLI, please review the list of titles that the Collection Management Committee has determined are available for purchase via ProQuest. This Google spreadsheet has four tabs: No Copies in I-Share (~3,100 titles), No Print Copies in I-Share (~4,300 titles), the complete list of titles available with I-Share inventory counts, and a list of titles purchased since January 1, 2018. Each tab includes the Proquest Document ID, Title, Author, Imprint, Publisher, Publication Date, Proquest Subject, Language, Price, Anticipated Consortial Price, and I-Share Inventory Counts for your information.
 
Once you have identified titles you would like to purchase, please complete the form on Survey Monkey. Following the receipt of your order, CARLI staff will confirm the consortial Non-Linear price (your final price) with you before placing the order. CARLI will then send your library an invoice for the titles that you confirm for purchase.
 
Orders must be requested via SurveyMonkey by May 10, 2018 to be processed and invoiced this fiscal year (prior to June 30, 2018).

Education (Curriculum Materials, K-12) Education (Curriculum Materials, K-12) 

CARLI member libraries are invited to participate in the ongoing education collaborative collection development project. Via conversations with educators, the committee has collected K-12 curriculum titles being used throughout Illinois. The title list was refined to exclude titles already held by I-Share libraries, leaving unique items.
 
To participate, please add your institution′s name to the Google Sheet next to the title/set your library will purchase. We ask that all participating libraries allow Universal Borrowing (UB) or Interlibrary Loan to CARLI members of titles selected as a part of this project. 
 
Last year six CARLI member libraries participated and purchased $32,643 in curriculum sets ranging in price from $175 to $6,000 per set. This greatly increases CARLI member institutions′ access to materials being used throughout classrooms in Illinois.

One-Time Purchases

CARLI member libraries are invited to participate in the One-Time Purchases collaborative project.
 
The project′s goal is to have every CARLI library purchase two or more unique print titles which are not owned by CARLI and/or I-Share Libraries at least six months after their publication date. We believe that after six months most titles that would have been purchased will have been added to OCLC and I-Share. Please purchase titles between February and June 2018.
 
The focus of this project is not to have participants purchase titles of low or limited value. Due to budget issues, we suspect that member libraries have not been able to buy all the print books they wanted. These are the titles we hope member libraries will commit to purchasing for the project. If every member purchases a few that are not held in our consortium, our joint collection will be richer.
 
Last year CARLI libraries purchased 164 titles for the project. We hope to have more participants this year! With everyone working together, we can provide more materials to our libraries′ users.

Preservation Tips:

Communicating the Value of Preservation – Student Worker Training
Melanie R. Schoenborn, Binding and Processing Manager, Book Conservator, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville

Student workers are on the front lines and behind the scenes in all types of college and research libraries in Illinois. Within many libraries, student workers process new and reserve materials, relabel, reprocess, and shelve. They are circulation attendants, computer maintenance personnel, and other hands-on workers as needed within their institutions on a daily basis. Much of the work student workers do is repetitive. Knowing how to handle different types of material as well as knowing when something needs preservation care is something that can be taught and learned. Training student workers in preservation processes can help extend the life of library materials thereby reducing costs for replacements and in turn shows the value of their work.

Communicating the Value of Preservation – Working With Facilities … a Cautionary Tale

As one who values preservation and its value for my collection, I hoped to write a piece about a successful effort working with our campus facilities staff to improve the environmental conditions in our Archives and Special Collections at Lake Forest College. Alas, the story does not have an entirely happy ending although it does not necessarily have an unhappy ending. I consider my communication efforts a work in progress, and believe that the environmental problems that occasionally afflict our area will continue to be addressed. 
 
The climate control system was not functioning optimally, with wide fluctuations between 72 degrees and 62 degrees in the course of a couple of hours. Nobody seemed to know how the system worked, and every week I placed a work order to have the fluctuating temperatures addressed, as consistency is ideal for special collections materials. Placing a work order did not solve the problem as the people working on the system did not understand the underlying reasons behind the many work orders.

Preservation Week April 22-28, 2018

What is Preservation Week?
Preservation Week, a public outreach program and national campaign to raise awareness about preservation, takes place from April 22-28, 2018. According to the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS), a division of the American Library Association, the goal is to encourage "libraries and other institutions to use Preservation Week to connect our communities through events, activities, and resources that highlight what we can do, individually and together, to preserve our personal and shared collections." 

What can you do to celebrate preservation week?
Host a speaker, have a tour, create an exhibit, use social media, or get creative to promote preservation awareness.  ALCTS has provided ideas for event planning, including a link to Easy, Low Cost Ideas to celebrate preservation week as well as helpful tools, such as handouts and webinars.

WIU Libraries Website Receives Illinois Bicentennial Recognition

The Western Illinois University Libraries' Laws of Illinois website has been officially recognized as a Bicentennial Project by the Illinois Bicentennial Commission. The application for project recognition was supported by Macomb Mayor Mike Inman and the McDonough County Historical Society.

The website, which is available through the WIU Libraries, links to digitized volumes of the Laws of Illinois from 1818-1920 and 1971-present, volumes of the laws for the Northwest, Indiana and Illinois Territories and volumes of Illinois Revised Statutes. Some of the volumes linked to the site were digitized from the collections available in the WIU and Illinois State Libraries, with support from the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI). The site also links to volumes that were digitized from other libraries by Google and volumes in the Hathi Trust Digital Library. The text of most volumes can be searched. Indexes to the Illinois laws that were digitized by the University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign and the Illinois State Library are also linked to the site.

While the online collection is incomplete, the available volumes shed light on Illinois' history and genealogy. Some of the volumes of the Laws of Illinois include reports from the state treasurer and auditor. 

The Laws of Illinois website contains information about the online collection, as well as instructions on how to find laws on a particular topic.

Illinois History Digital Imaging Grant Program

The Secretary of State/Illinois State Library is now offering the Illinois History-Digital Imaging grant program to provide funding for eligible libraries to carry out projects involving the selection, digital capture, storage, and provision of web access to their important historical and cultural collections. Digital Imaging grants support the creation of digital collections while at the same time expanding access to those collections via the Illinois Digital Archives.

The priority of the program is digitization of original source materials relevant to Illinois' history and culture.

Grant projects will involve the production of both digital images and associated metadata in accordance with prescribed standards, and, depending on the format, could also involve the production of audio descriptions and/or transcriptions to enhance accessibility and comply with state and federal law.

UIC Library of the Health Sciences Receives Medical Library Association Award

The University of Illinois at Chicago′s Library of the Health Sciences has earned the Medical Library Association′s 2018 Research Advancement in Health Sciences Librarianship Award.

The award recognizes health sciences libraries that have made significant contributions to the clinical, educational, research or administrative outcomes at their institutions by fostering a culture of research among health science librarians.

Targeting Autism Forum at the State Library

The Targeting Autism Forum will be held on May 17-18, 2018 in the atrium of the State Library in Springfield. The full agenda for the forum is available at the State Library′s website. 

To register, send an email to Suzanne Schriar  with a subject line that reads "Registration for the Forum". Please include your name, job title, name of your library or other professional affiliation and a brief statement about your interest in the topic of autism and libraries. As in previous years, there is no registration fee to attend. 

Lodging for May 16-17 will be provided at no additional charge at the Wyndham Springfield City Centre. 

Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Registrations will be accepted now through Friday, April 27.

Illinois Library Association's Awards Program

The Illinois Library Association′s awards program recognizes excellence in librarianship and library service in Illinois. The program increases awareness of the contributions of all association participants, including recipients, sponsors, co-sponsors, and committees/forums. This is an opportunity to let colleagues know about innovative programs and ideas that hard-working librarians, staff, and trustees throughout Illinois have created. Inspiration and good ideas should be shared! 

Nominating someone for an ILA Award has never been easier! There are 17 annual awards to choose from. Once you choose, then you can submit your nomination form and all supporting documentation via the ILA Web site.
