2019 CARLI Annual Meeting and Directors' Meetings

Registration is open for the 2019 CARLI Annual Meeting to be held Friday, November 15 at the I Hotel and Conference Center in Champaign. Staff at any CARLI member library are invited to attend.

A meeting of the CARLI Library Governing Directors will precede the Annual Meeting. Directors should register for this meeting if they are planning to attend. A separate registration is required for each meeting.

Space is limited. Registration closes Thursday, November 7.

A special room rate of $149 has been arranged at the I-Hotel and Conference Center for those who are planning to travel to Champaign on Thursday, November 14. This room block is only available until October 14. Please book your rooms as soon as possible if you are planning to stay overnight in Champaign. To make reservations, contact the I-Hotel directly at 217-819-5000 or book online with the Reservation Code CARLI2019.

Alma/Primo VE Project Update

The CARLI staff remain impressed with the responsiveness and cooperation of all I-Share member libraries as work continues towards the Alma Test Migration. At this time, almost all migration forms have been reviewed and processed, and data for 77 libraries have been extracted and delivered to Ex Libris.

The next task at hand will be completion of the Alma Configuration Form. CARLI staff will shortly have lists of consortial recommendations as well as guidance for completing the forms, which should be released to libraries within the next week. Libraries will have until Monday, September 18 to complete the forms, which are intended to begin the process of configuring Alma.

The outcome of your work with your configuration form will be that baseline settings will be in place for you to begin working with Alma when the test instances are delivered in October. Both CARLI and Ex Libris expect that all libraries will modify their configurations further after they begin working and training with Alma. No library should feel that they are under pressure to make permanent, long term decisions while entering options in the configuration form.

Once the Configuration Forms are completed, all the worksheet deliverables required by Ex Libris and CARLI will be done for the test round! We still expect your full test environments to be delivered by Ex Libris in mid-October 2019.

Configuration forms will be the focus of our next several "Office Hours" webinars, which continue each Thursday at 2:00 p.m. Each of the Office Hours sessions includes some presentation time by Ex Libris and CARLI staff and time for your questions.

Finally, we continue to request your help in identifying training rooms around the state that we could use for in-person Alma and Primo VE training later this fall and into spring 2020. In particular, we are interested in space in the Chicago area that would be available during the last week of October. CARLI will take care of all the arrangements and any costs, we are simply asking you to help us find suitable spaces at a variety of geographically dispersed locations. Please share any ideas for training rooms in this simple survey. Thanks in advance for your help!

Thanks again to all of you who have put your effort into the project so far. Remember to refer to the CARLI Alma & Primo VE website for updates.

Congratulations Kris!

Please join us in congratulating our very own, Kris Hammerstrand, on being chosen by the Illinois Library Association to receive the TBS, Inc. Technical Services Award. This annual award, presented by ILA′s Resources and Technical Services Forum and sponsored by Today′s Business Solutions, Inc., is awarded to an individual who has made a substantial contribution in the area of library technical services, principally with commitment to leadership, programming, and professional development in the technical services field.

Kris, a tireless champion of Illinois libraries, has served in her role at CARLI since the consortium′s formation in 2005. Her career began in 1983 with one of CARLI′s predecessor organizations, making her tenure with CARLI span 35 years. During her tenure, Kristine has attracted more than 70 libraries to CARLI′s "I-Share" library management system, dramatically increasing the number of members to 91 at present. She is a tireless champion on behalf of resource sharing in Illinois.

Kris′ primary responsibilities have always involved the online catalog (in earlier days′ parlance), library management systems, discovery layers, and all the associated data. She is an expert in understanding how that data work together to provide discovery and delivery to the patrons, students, faculty, and staff of ALL Illinois′ libraries, not just academic and research libraries. Kris is a leader who exemplifies her philosophy to all CARLI member libraries that academic libraries are part of the fabric of the Illinois resource sharing environment that includes multitype libraries. She regularly serves on library system and Illinois State Library committees that expand resource sharing initiatives to statewide constituencies; currently, these include the RAILS Consortia Committee and Find More Illinois Working Group. Kris has always strongly encouraged ILLINET member libraries′ (public, school, and special) use of CARLI′s ILS (whatever its iteration at the time) for discovery and resource sharing.

All of us at the CARLI Office congratulate Kris on this well-deserved recognition! The award will be presented at the Awards Luncheon to be held on Tuesday, October 22, during the 2019 Illinois Library Association Annual Conference in Tinley Park. The full announcement is available at the ILA website.
