E-resources Selection System Reminder

The CARLI E-resources Selection System will be open for FY19 subscription commitments through May 18. If you have any questions about working with the system or the products being offered for FY19 please send a note to CARLI support.

Also, we are aware that the export buttons in the library app are not working. We have our developers looking into this and we will get it corrected as quickly as possible. In the meantime if you need an exported report please send a note to CARLI support.

6th Annual Instruction Showcase

The CARLI Instruction Committee is coordinating its Sixth Annual Instruction Showcase on Thursday, May 31 at Dominican University in River Forest, IL.

The showcase features innovative elements in library instruction and assessment, where presenters demonstrate instruction techniques and tools that are designed to enhance library instruction. This year′s program also features a morning panel on faculty collaboration, with special guest faculty panelists from member institutions.

Volunteer for a CARLI Committee: Deadline is April 27

Each year CARLI has a number of opportunities to serve on various committees. Service on CARLI committees affords individuals a unique opportunity to use their experience and expertise to help shape the future of the consortium and its services. CARLI is now seeking volunteers to serve on nine advisory committees. Volunteers chosen will serve a three-year term, July 1, 2018 through June 30, 2021. Faculty and staff members from all CARLI member libraries, with all levels of experience, are encouraged to apply.

To volunteer, please complete the committee volunteer form by April 27. To be considered for appointment, you must fill out the online form, even if you have previously submitted a form, or if you are a current committee member whose term is expiring and you wish to be considered again. CARLI seeks to include as many individuals and institutions as possible in committee service, so committee rosters are limited to one person from any institution, and reappointments are not routinely made.

Forms submitted by April 27 will be considered for initial FY 2019 appointments. The list of all volunteers will be retained until March 1, 2019 and will be used to fill other committee vacancies as they occur.

Individuals accepting appointments to CARLI committees are expected to participate fully and actively in the work of the committee, including regular attendance at meetings and committee-sponsored events held throughout the calendar year. CARLI makes every effort to conduct the majority of committee business using web conferencing technologies or via conference calls. However, committee service may require time and/or travel expenses for one or more in-person meetings each year.

The Senior Director, in consultation with the Executive Committee of the CARLI Board of Directors will make appointments no later than June 15, 2017. All new committee members will officially begin work on July 1, 2018.

Webinar: Introduction to the "Laws of Illinois" Web Site

The Laws of Illinois web site has been recognized by the Governor's Office of the Illinois Bicentennial as an officially designated Project celebrating Illinois' 200th birthday. The site was recognized as an important resource for Illinois history and genealogy.

Join Linda Zellmer, Western Illinois University, for a webinar on May 7, 2:00 pm to learn more about the Laws of Illinois web site.

Laws of Illinois links to digitized volumes of the Laws of Illinois (to 1920), laws from 1971 to the Present available on the General Assembly website, Illinois Revised Statutes and territorial laws for the Northwest, Indiana and Illinois territories. It includes volumes from the WIU and Illinois State Libraries, other libraries, volumes in Google Books, and the Hathi Trust Digital Library. The text of most volumes is searchable. Indexes to the Laws of Illinois digitized by the University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign and the Illinois State Library are also linked from the site. WIU volumes were digitized with funds from CARLI.

Illinois Fire Service Institute Burn Simulation and Recovery Workshop

The CARLI Preservation Committee is sponsoring a Burn Simulation and Recovery Workshop on Wednesday, June 13, 2018, from 8:30 am–4:15 pm. The workshop will be held at the Illinois Fire Services Institute, 11 Gerty Drive, Champaign.  

This workshop will include presentations by a fire professional, hands-on fire extinguisher training, burn simulation, and practice recovery of library materials. Jennifer Teper, Bud Velde Preservation Librarian and Head of Preservation Services at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will lead the salvage and recovery discussion and exercise.

New VuFind Overview Webinar for I-Share Libraries

Save the date! On Wednesday, May 9, 2018 from 2:00-3:00pm, CARLI staff will present a webinar for I-Share Libraries about the New VuFind catalog.

Preservation Tip

We’re All in This Together: Communicating the Value of Preservation to Users and Stakeholders

Library materials are a shared resource. So, the importance of preservation awareness and proper care of materials cannot be understated since they will ultimately impact user and stakeholder activities such as research and instruction. There are a few ways to communicate the value of preservation to users. One approach is to develop and implement policies and procedures for the use of library materials and to make those policies accessible. In some environments, such as in archives and special collections, making sure users have read and understood proper protocols is key.  Policies can clarify that the use of library material supports preservation activities and is based on the department′s preservation goals. Outreach activities are another way to raise preservation awareness. Garnering interest in library preservation activities through exhibits or social media can be fun and creative ways to get the word out. Exhibits, tutorials, and social media posts can showcase the ways in which preservation activities are critical to ensuring that library materials will be used by future generations.

Congratulations to Mary Konkel

Mary Konkel from College of DuPage was recently elected to serve a three-year term on the OCLC Americas Regional Council as a delegate-at-large. 

The OCLC Global Council is elected to represent the global library community as it comes together to be part of the governance of the worldwide OCLC cooperative. The Global Council delegates are called upon to reflect your views on the issues facing the community of members.

Keynote Address: Promises and Pitfalls of 21st Century Resource Sharing - In this presentation, George Needham will discuss the roots of interlibrary loan in the early 20th century, consider the impact of technology in the forms of the MARC record, OCLC, and the web, and then look at what forms resources sharing may take in the years to come.

ForwardFocus Conference Call for Proposals

The ForwardFocus conference team is now accepting proposals for both in-person and virtual presentations. 
 
The Conference Theme is "The Changing Information Landscape: Libraries in the "Post-Truth" and Open Access Era  2018"

It is an important time for librarians to be active in their campus communities. ForwardFocus wants to hear about how community college librarians are teaching information literacy, advocating for access, and leading students and faculty into the new information age. This year′s conference seeks to highlight community college libraries as they adapt and thrive in the midst of the current information landscape.
