Spirit of Survival sculpture—CARLI Digital Collections Featured Image

From Sculpture Collection (Lewis & Clark Community College) in CARLI Digital Collections

The weathered bronze patina of this is huge, sort of art deco-style bird sculpture stands out starkly against the bright white and blue of Lewis & Clark Community College's Olin Science Building. The bird rests in the grass beside one of the water features on campus (seen better in this view of the sculpture). Seems appropriate since the artist was inspired by watching egrets during the Great Flood of 1993 that affected the region.

The collection features campus sculpture by eleven different artists. Multiple views of each object are included, in some cases showing the artwork at different times of day and different light, and/or providing close-ups of sculptural details. The majority are monumental exterior sculptures. Some are rather abstract and modernist (like The Spirit of Survival shown above) and others are figurative, for example the sculpture of Sacagawea and Jean Baptiste. My favorite is Magdalena Abakanowicz’s Five Walking Figures, but I couldn’t decide which of the ten images of it to feature, I think you really have to look at them all!
