Senior Staff Cataloger - Wheaton College

The Senior Staff Cataloger plays a key role in selecting, enhancing, creating, and maintaining bibliographic metadata that enable library users to discover and locate the monographic resources they need. Work focuses on our primary circulating collections in the main library, also including Archives and Special Collections, but may also intersect with the Marion E. Wade Center. The Senior Staff Cataloger reports to the Team Leader for Acquisitions and Discovery Services and supervises student employees. This full-time staff role pays $54,000 - $56,000 annually. 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Uses knowledge of metadata standards (e.g. MARC21, RDA) to select appropriate descriptive records from external databases (e.g., OCLC WorldCat) to match library monographic materials (copy cataloging), make necessary corrections, and enhance them with subject and descriptive metadata as needed.
  • Adds and maintains appropriate location and call number data in the library services platform (LSP) (Ex Libris Alma) along with applying classification numbers (e.g., Library of Congress and Dewey Decimal Classification, as well as local classification).
  • Manages batchloading of descriptive record sets from vendors (e.g., GOBI) using library software (e.g., Ex Libris Alma and MarcEdit).
  • Troubleshoots assigned resource description problems and communicates actions and resolutions in our helpdesk ticketing system (Springshare LibAnswers). 
  • Creates and maintains clear, accurate documentation and follows established policies and procedures. 
  • Manages data enhancement and clean-up projects, including removal of descriptive records from the LSP.
  • Creates original cataloging records as needed, including for Special Collections material as well as electronic theses, dissertations, and other student papers.
  • Coordinates physical monographic piece processing in close collaboration with the Acquisitions/Processing Coordinator.
  • Participates in cross-functional library teams, and contributes to the library-wide mission and plans.
  • Hires, trains, and supervises student employees.

Qualifications 

  • Undergraduate degree and significant cataloging experience required; Master’s degree in Library and Information Science with specialization in cataloging and metadata, preferred.
  • Ability to quickly learn and adapt to new technology and a commitment to ongoing learning and growth.
  • Possesses facility with or is interested in learning to apply technological approaches to managing bibliographic metadata.
  • Experience with supervising others.
  • Proven oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated accuracy, attention to detail, and strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to balance accuracy and efficiency. 
  • Demonstrated creativity and problem-solving ability.
  • Flexibility to adapt in a changing work environment.
