Salvaging Mold and Water Damaged Library Materials: A Preservation Workshop

The CARLI Preservation Committee is pleased to sponsor a workshop on Salvaging Mold and Water Damaged Library Materials in Springfield on July 11, 2017, from 8:30am-3:30pm at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library.

The workshop will include an overview of mold and library materials including basic morphology, sources of mold, a brief introduction to health risks when dealing with mold, and options for remediation/removal.

Attendees will also learn about salvaging wet library materials, including an introduction to disaster response when water strikes and an overview of methods for drying various types of materials found in library collections – books, documents, and audio-visual materials.  The session will include a “no stress, no tears” hands-on exercise salvaging wet library materials.

The instructors for the day will be Jennifer Hain Teper, Bud Velde Preservation Librarian and Head, Preservation Services at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Bonnie Parr, Historical Documents Conservator at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.

The intended audience is staff and librarians from member libraries.

Registration will initially be limited to one person per institution. If space remains by June 26th, registration will be open to all interested CARLI members. 

CARLI will provide box lunches (sandwich, side, cookie) and a drink for lunch.

Parking:
Parking is available at the Museum parking garage (1.5 blocks north of the library building) and costs $1.50 per hour up to a maximum of $9.75 per day.

Due to space limitations, only one person per CARLI member institution will be allowed to register – on a first come, first register basis. All registrants will be initially placed on a waitlist and will be notified via email if registered. If space remains after June 26h, registration will be open to all interested CARLI members.
