CARLI's Agreement with Five College Library Depository Ended

CARLI's agreement with the Five College Library Depository ended on June 30, 2016 as a result of budget reductions that CARLI was asked to implement for fiscal years 2016-2018. The agreement, initiated in May 2011, provided access to a print repository of scholarly journals. Please send an  with any questions.

 


All CARLI member libraries were affiliate members of the Five College Library Depository through an agreement completed in May 2011.

What is the Five College Library Depository?

Managed by the Five College consortium of Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke and Smith Colleges and the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the Five College Library Depository is a trusted repository of persistent print collections. The Depository collection consists of a single paper copy of the journals in six electronic journal collections:

American Chemical Society Legacy Archives

American Physical Society

American Psychological Association Journals

Institute of Physics

JSTOR

Project Muse

Access to the physical volumes of the journals in the Five College Depository was available to CARLI member libraries that subscribe to the digitized collections when online access was unavailable or when CARLI member libraries were unable to print successfully from the online or scanned copies.

Access to the Material Included:

  • Scanning and transmission of articles from journals if the electronic equivalent were unavailable online due to scheduled maintenance or system failure
  • Hard copy of articles from the journals if the requestor had been unable to print successfully from the online equivalent
  • Circulation of bound and unbound volumes or issues of journals under the following conditions:
    • Use of these volumes was restricted to a monitored location in the library of the requesting institution
    • All loan periods were for two weeks from the time the item was mailed from the Depository until it was received back by the Depository.
    • Requested items were only sent using carriers that provide tracking services
  • All materials stored in the FCLD were also available for on-site use in the FCLD Reading Room with prior arrangement. Appointment times were available between 8:30 A.M. and 4:00 P.M., Monday through Friday. Appointments may be made directly with FCLD or by calling (413) 542-8903. Accessing Materials within the Depository

To request a photocopy, scan or fax of an article, member libraries were required to email the Depository directly. Articles were supplied as scanned images, photocopies, or faxes. PDF files were emailed directly to users if possible.  Photocopies were delivered to the user’s library, where they were held for pick-up or placed in campus mail, at the discretion of the library. Requested items were processed within 24 hours. The Depository is closed on weekends.

Within the email, please include this text:

“__________________ (insert name of institution) is a CARLI institution and is an affiliate member of the Five College Library Depository. Per CARLI’s agreement with the Five College Depository, we are requesting this article because it is unavailable online due to scheduled maintenance or system failure, or we have unable to print successfully from the online equivalent.”

To request a bound volume send an OCLC interlibrary loan (ILL) request to the UMass Amherst Interlibrary Loan Department (OCLC symbol is AUM.) UMass Amherst will request the material from the Depository and then send to the requesting library.

In the borrowing notes field of the request, please include this text:

“_____________________ (insert name of institution) is a CARLI institution and is an affiliate member of the Five College Library Depository. As an affiliate member, we are entitled to the loan of this material.”

All material should be returned to the UMass Amherst Interlibrary Loan Department.

Contributing Volumes to the Depository

The Five College library Depository will accept individual volumes to fill gaps in titles held at the depository and entire runs of publications within the designated collections that are not held at any of the Five College Libraries.

Affiliate members relinquish ownership of any volumes they send to Five Colleges, Inc. The accepted volumes will be accepted as irrevocable gifts. Volumes contributed by affiliate members are accessioned into the University of Massachusetts Library Depository Collection.

If your library is withdrawing materials because the journals are available in an electronic collection, and you would like to donate your items to the Depository, please:

  1. Confirm that the Depository does not already have the materials by searching the Five College Library Catalog.
  2. If the item appears and is available in the location “Five College Depository” or “FC Depository,” check the holdings by choosing that location.
  3. If your journal and volumes are not in the Depository, please with the subject heading “Items for Five College Depository.” Within your message, please indicate the exact material to be donated. CARLI staff will confirm with the Five College Depository that the material is needed and will work with you to donate your materials.
