The Southern Illinois University School of Medicine Library seeks a collaborative, forward-thinking librarian to lead its Technical Services Department and shape the collections that power medical education, research, and clinical care across central and southern Illinois.

About the Role

Reporting to the Director of the Medical Library, the Head of Technical Services and Collection Development leads the identification, acquisition, organization, and delivery of scholarly and institutional resources supporting the School of Medicine's education, research, clinical care, and community service missions. This leadership position will supervise, develop, and mentor the Technical Services team and direct the workflows, policies, and procedures of the department. Working in close partnership with the Library Director, this position will help shape the library's strategic priorities in alignment with SIU-SOM’s mission. The successful candidate will build teams, design sustainable practices, and ensure that faculty, staff, and students have access to quality, evidence-based information resources.

Responsibilities and Duties 

  • Lead, mentor, and develop staff in the Technical Services Department, including recruiting, hiring, and building a sustainable, cross-trained team
  • Set strategic priorities and develop policies and workflows for acquisitions, cataloging, electronic resources, collection development, serials, interlibrary loan, and stacks maintenance
  • Manage the library's electronic resources ecosystem, including licensing and vendor negotiations, product trials, OpenAthens administration, and troubleshooting across the ILS (Alma), website, and link resolver
  • Build and steward a collection of scholarly resources in all formats, balancing cost-effective access, user needs, and budgetary resources
  • Provide direction and support for the institutional archives and rare book collection 
  • Serve as the library's liaison to CARLI (Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois)

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited program
  • Five years of experience in library technical services and/or collection development
  • Three years of supervisory experience, including hiring, training, and developing staff
  • Experience with e-resource management, licensing, and troubleshooting
  • Experience cataloging print and electronic resources
  • Knowledge of the principles of library technical services and scholarly communications
  • Experience with integrated library systems
  • Excellent oral, written, and analytical communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems and work collaboratively in a team environment

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience building or developing library departments, including position design, recruitment, and staff development
  • Experience in medical libraries or with biomedical resources
  • Experience with archives, rare books, or special collections, including preservation or collection care
