Register by November 10 for the 2016 CARLI Annual Meeting and Directors′ Meeting

The 2016 CARLI Annual Meeting will be held Friday, November 18 at the I Hotel and Conference Center in Champaign. Staff at any CARLI member library are invited to attend.

The morning meeting will feature a report from new CARLI Senior Director Anne Craig, and an overview of several of the 2016 CARLI Committee projects. In the afternoon, join the kickoff for the CARLI 2020 Strategic Plan and have your voice heard as we look to shape the next 3 years for our statewide consortium. The kickoff will feature an interactive group discussion.

Highlights:

  • Each table will discuss 3-4 fire starter questions.
  • One-two points from each table will be shared with the larger group.
  • Participants will also be encouraged to submit written feedback.
  • The CARLI Board of Directors will use this input as a springboard for the strategic planning initiative: CARLI 2020.

Staff at CARLI libraries who are unable to attend the meeting, or who would like to provide written feedback on the Strategic Plan 2020 discussion are encouraged to do so by completing a short questionnaire .

A meeting of the CARLI Library Directors will precede the Annual Meeting. Directors need to register for this event as well as the Annual Meeting if they are planning to attend both.

I-Share Interest Survey Now in Progress

For those of you not in I-Share, CARLI would like to gauge your interest in joining the 86 Illinois academic and research libraries that currently use I-Share (CARLI's Ex Libris Voyager system) as their library management and resource sharing system. Please indicate your interest by completing this brief non-binding survey, even if your library is not actively considering migration.

All libraries that express interest will be contacted by the CARLI staff to schedule a phone call to discuss their interest, the implementation process, and to draft a cost estimate for the library.

We would like to have your survey response by November 18, 2016, so that we can conduct the follow-up calls and have a sense of the volume of interest before the next CARLI Board meeting on December 2.

You may be aware that CARLI has begun the process to select the next generation of the I-Share library management system. We believe it will be at least 2018 before a selection is considered; we are, therefore, eager to ensure that we offer CARLI libraries the opportunity to apply to participate in the existing Ex Libris Voyager platform in the meantime.

E-Resources: Calendar Year 2017 Database Selection Period Now Open

The CY 17 Selection Cycle is now open to libraries for their Calendar Year 2017 (January 1, 2017–December 31, 2017) subscription commitments using the newly redesigned Selection System. The selection period will run through November 11, 2016. CARLI staff have sent a detailed announcement and instructions to the E-Resources Contacts email list notifying members that the password-protected CARLI selection database is available.

We realize this is a particularly challenging time to make subscription decisions for the upcoming calendar year. Libraries should be careful to make financial commitments for electronic resource subscriptions for CY17 only where adequate funding can be assured.

Following the close of the selection system on November 11, preliminary billing estimates will be sent to subscribing libraries for review and subscription lists will be submitted to vendors. Service for CY17 subscribers will begin on January 1, 2017 and final invoices will be sent to subscribing libraries after January 1, 2017.

Webinar: "Scaling Up: Rebuilding an Instruction Program with Limited Resources"

Do you think your library′s instruction program may need to change in response to changes at your institution? The CARLI Instruction Committee wants to help!

Our theme for this year is: "Evolving Library Instruction: Negotiating Change in Uncertain Times." Because of current trends and challenges in higher education, libraries are changing the way they do things so they can continue to provide quality service and meaningful instruction with different or fewer resources. We are planning a series of free webinars from librarians in the region who are taking bold steps into a new world.

We’ll kick off the series with: "Scaling Up: Rebuilding An Instruction Program With Limited Resources" on Wednesday, December 7, 1:00–2:00 pm. This webinar will be presented by Amy Hall and Sarah Leeman, National Louis University,

National Louis University′s Library & Learning Support (LLS) unit has experienced significant changes over the past few years. Shifting trends in higher education, new university programs, a department reorganization, and university-wide resizing all continue to impact a variety of library services. In this webinar, NLU librarians discuss their plan to rebuild their instruction program, focusing on targeted outreach efforts and curriculum-embedded information literacy instruction that allows LLS to maximize student impact even in a time of limited resources.

To register, or for more information about the webinar and the presenters, visit the event page.

Mark your calendars now as we hope you can join us for this free CARLI event!

Resource Sharing Statistics Webinars

Are you trying to pull those ″hard-to-find″ interlibrary loan statistics that really show how your collection is being used, but you’re not sure where to locate them? Do you need ideas for making interlibrary loan numbers more meaningful and interesting, not just to fellow library staff, but also to other departments and administrators on campus? Be sure to attend the ″Resource Sharing Statistics: Navigating the Numbers, Harnessing the Data″ webinar series, presented by the CARLI Resource Sharing Committee.

The first webinar, covering I-Share, was held on October 26. A recording of that webinar will be available soon.

A second webinar, on both WorldShare and ILLiad, will take place on Wednesday, November 9, 10–11 am, with a half-hour devoted to each ILL system. You can register now for this second webinar. This webinar will also be recorded and available from the CARLI web site after the event

Voyager Web Reports Beta

Voyager Web Reports Beta, a new web-based reporting tool designed by CARLI IT staff, provides an easy way for I-Share library staff to run reports against their Voyager databases without the need to install the Oracle/ODBC client and Microsoft Access. A CARLI Voyager Oracle Account and a web browser are the only requirements to use Voyager Web Reports Beta. There are currently over 60 reports available on the site with more reports on the way.

You may view the current list of available reports. We encourage you to give the new tool a try.
