CARLI Executive Director Susan Singleton Retires

Susan Singleton, CARLI's first Executive Director following the formation of the consortium in 2005, retires on July 29. "It has been an honor to work with the staff and directors of the academic libraries in the state and with the CARLI staff throughout this first decade of CARLI’s existence.” said Singleton. "I have no doubt that new director Anne Craig, the Board of Directors, and the CARLI staff working with the truly outstanding CARLI community, will ensure a smooth transition for CARLI's future."

We are sad to see her go, but wish her well in her retirement.

I-Share

CARLI Welcomes 3 New Libraries to I-Share

Please join us in welcoming 3 new libraries to I-Share. The new libraries are: Black Hawk College Library, Moline and Galva; Wiggin Library, Meadville Lombard Theological School, Chicago; and South Suburban College Library, South Holland. These I-Share libraries now have their collections fully represented in the I-Share union catalog and accessible for resource sharing.

With the addition of these libraries’ 14,286 new bibliographic records and 74,815 new holdings records, the I-Share union catalog now contains 14.1 million unique bibliographic records representing the holdings of 86 CARLI I-Share member institutions. The combination of this enormous consortial collection with I-Share’s resource sharing services gives I-Share library patrons ready access to a collection that ranks among the world’s greatest research libraries.

I-Share Universal Borrowing Environment Webinar

The CARLI Office will be offering a webinar, "Overview of the I-Share Universal Borrowing (UB) Resource Sharing Environment: Background, Relationships, and Processes" on Thursday, August 4, from 1:30-2:30 pm.

Adapted from the UB Training provided to libraries joining I-Share, this webinar will cover the foundational principles and processes that establish UB in Voyager. The intended audience is current I-Share library staff that work with, or are interested in, I-Share Resource Sharing.

Library staff already familiar with Voyager Circulation and Call Slip will get more from this UB webinar, however all library staff may attend. This webinar will be a chance to refresh your understanding and ask questions you may have.

The webinar will help you be able to answer these questions:

  • What is Universal Borrowing (UB)?
  • How are settings standardized across I-Share?
  • How does Voyager know which of my patrons are able to borrow from other I-Share libraries?
  • How does Voyager know whether another library's patron can borrow my library's materials?
  • What do UBIN, UBLong, UBReg, and UBNonCirc mean?
  • What are ILLINET libraries?
  • How are patron records used during UB transactions?
  • What are the differences between Local Call Slips and UB Call Slips?
  • What steps does a typical request go through?
  • What is request promotion and how does it work?

Registration is open now. Click on the "Register" tab to register individually or to represent a group. The registration deadline is Wednesday, August 3. Connection information will be sent closer to the date of the webinar.

CARLI plans to record the webinar and post it to the CARLI website for later viewing; an announcement will be made when the recording is available.

Please .

I-Share Libraries Should Enable WorldShare Collection Manager

OCLC has expressed the importance of WorldShare Collection Manager in the services that they offer to CARLI and member libraries. Specifically, all I-Share member libraries should enable access to Collection Manager for their staff. If a library has not yet activated its Collection Manager site, a staff member with a cataloging authorization should apply for access.

FY2016 I-Share Annual Statistics

The I-Share consortial stats for FY2016 are now available.

These consortial stats include:

  • Collection Stat 8: Database Record Count
  • Collection Stat 9: Unique Titles Report*
  • UB Stat 1: Outgoing ILL [Lending]
  • UB Stat 2: Incoming ILL [Borrowing]
  • Borrowing and Lending Comparison

Note that the columns in these reports are sortable for easy manipulation on screen.

*The Unique Titles Report does not yet include counts for our new libraries, Black Hawk College, Meadville Lombard Seminary, and South Suburban College. Their counts will be added, and the overall count revised, once the new libraries' titles appear in the I-Share union catalog.

Additionally, libraries may find statistical reports for their own collections in their xxxftp directories.

If you have questions about the reports, you can look up descriptions of each report, "I-Share Annual Voyager Statistics Package". or

Collaborative Collection Development Google Group

The Collection Management Committee (CMC) has created a Google Group for CARLI member libraries to discuss and coordinate collaborative collection development projects for the 2016-2017 academic year.

Many of us are buying fewer books than we did in the past. According to a survey conducted by the CMC earlier this year, there is interest in working together to increase the number of unique holdings available in the state and the number of eBooks available to CARLI members. The committee discussed a few models for collaborative collection development in a recent webinar, including a model that will increase eBook access for all CARLI members.

The Google Group contains a summary report from the survey, and has a few threads organized by popular subjects. Collaborate with librarians directly to divide up a subject area, commit to purchase X amount of unique content in the subject of your choice, or use the group to ask general questions and connect with colleagues. Anyone can post questions or comments to the existing threads, or create new threads.

The Collection Management Committee will monitor the group throughout the summer and coordinate with interested librarians on specific projects in August. We hope to identify specific projects by August 15, 2016, in order to plan for next steps. If you have questions about the Google Group, please .
