Weeding: Communication & Outreach

Weeding Webinar: Re-evaluating Library Materials

Session Description:Matt Gorzalski, University Archivist, Southern Illinois University Carbondale (timing on the recording: 1:02-21:46) presents an overview of weeding, re-evaluating, and de-accessioning materials in an archival setting. Following that, we hear about two separate reference collection weeding projects: first David W. Bottorff, Head of Collection Management, at Regenstein Library, University of Chicago (timing on the recording: 22:07-39:07) talks about the process used at the University of Chicago to consolidate and weed 7 individual reference collections into 2 reference collections. Then, William A. McHugh, Principal Bibliographer, Coordinator for General and Interdisciplinary Services, and Reference Collection Management Librarian and Geoffrey Morse, Coordinator for Humanities and Social Sciences, both of Northwestern University Library (timing on the recording: 39:13-58:57) share their process and experiences reducing a very large reference collection in order to create more student space.
