CARLI Digital Collections Featured Image: Icarian Ribbon

From the Digital Image Collection (Western Illinois University) in CARLI Digital Collections.

This image represents one page of a 94-page sample ribbon book that is part of an extensive collection of Icarian materials, housed by Western Illinois University Libraries. French idealists, the Icarians established a communal society in Nauvoo, Illinois, in the 1850s, based on the principles of peace and brotherhood as set forth in Voyage en Icarie (1848), by leader Etienne Cabet. The Icarians crafted fine furniture and textiles, in addition to producing goods necessary to their livelihood. The ribbon book was secretly brought to America by Laurent Peyron, who intended to use it to launch the family business here.
