CARLI Instruction Committee: To Teach or Not to Teach: How Censorship Appears in Library Instruction - A Guided Conversation

Much of the conversation around libraries and censorship has centered around book bans and resource access, but censorship can also deeply affect how we approach our instruction. In this guided conversation, we will critically reflect on how censorship, from both internal and external influences, can affect our teaching practices as we build on our annual theme "Trust Us:" The Role of Library Instruction in Transforming Landscapes. 

Join the CARLI Instruction Committee on March 19th, from 12 p.m. - 1 p.m. CT as we reflect on this topic by exploring the following questions: 

1. Where does censorship show up in our daily workflows without anyone saying the word?
2. How can we use documentation and data to our advantage when we encounter censorship challenges?  
3. When have you quietly edited an example or resource list to “avoid drama”? What did that cost?
4. When/where/how are students censoring themselves?
5. Not enough time in a one shot – lack of context – is this censorship?
6. What are some resources and/or practices you have in your tool kit to navigate censorship in your instruction?
