2025 Burn Simulation and Recovery Workshop

The CARLI Preservation Committee welcomes all CARLI members to attend an in-person Burn Simulation and Recovery Workshop on Monday, June 9, 2025, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.at the Illinois Fire Service Institute in Champaign.

This free workshop will include presentations by a fire professional, hands-on fire extinguisher training, burn simulation, and practice recovery of library materials. Jennifer Teper, Bud Velde Preservation Librarian and Head of Preservation Services at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will lead the salvage and recovery discussion and exercise.

This workshop will take place, rain or shine. Portions of the day are outside, so please wear appropriate attire. Casual clothing is recommended. Long pants and closed-toe, sturdy shoes are required.

8:00 – 8:30 a.m. Check in with coffee / tea
 
8:30 – 9:30 a.m. Working with fire professionals discussion from a fire professional
 
9:30 – 9:45 a.m. Break
9:45 - 10:45 a.m. Classroom fire extinguisher training
10:45 - 11:45 a.m. Hands-on fire extinguisher training
11:45 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. Lunch and viewing of Cook County Administrative Building Fire Investigation video (lunch is provided)
12:45 - 1:15 p.m. Salvage/recovery discussion
1:15 – 3:15 p.m. Fire professionals create a burn, respond, and put out the fire, attendees practice recovery
 
3:15 – 3:30 p.m. Wrap-up Q&A

Lunch Information: A box lunch will be provide. When you register, you may select either a vegetarian or non-vegetarian option. Our caterer is working in a commercial kitchen where a wide variety of other foods are being prepared, often using some frozen and/or processed products that may have unknown trace ingredients. As a result, we are unable to guarantee that the food meets specific dietary requirements. Attendees with strict, specific dietary restrictions should plan to provide their own food.
