CANCELED: Preservation Committee Program at the Newberry Library and Chicago History Museum

The CARLI Preservation Committee invites you to attend guided walking tours of two CARLI Governing Member libraries, the Newberry Library and Chicago History Museum, on March 27, 2020. Attendees will be able to learn more about conservation and preservation efforts at the Newberry Library and the Chicago History Museum archives.

CARLI will provide box lunches (sandwich, side, cookie) and a drink.

The intended audience is staff and librarians from member libraries.

Participants will attend two of three options. When your registration is confirmed, please complete the enclosed survey to indicate your tour preferences. Due to space, please be aware that not everyone will be able to attend their top two selections.

Registration: To Register, please click the "Register" Tab above. Due to space limitations, only one person per CARLI member institution will be allowed to register – on a first come, first register basis. All registrants will be placed on a waitlist as the registration system does not filter by institution. You will be notified via email if you are registered or if you remain on the waitlist due to space considerations.

If space remains after March 9th, registration will be open to all interested CARLI members.

Registration deadline: Friday, March 20, 2020.

Travel from the Newberry Library to the Chicago History Museum:

Driving
Attendees may drive and pay for parking near the Chicago History Museum.

Walking
It is a 20-25 minute walk.

Public Transit

Preservation Committee members will be taking the bus and can help guide attendees.

Taking the bus between the Newberry Library and the Chicago History Museum (modified from the from the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) directions).

You will need to have $2.50 in cash for the trip to the museum and the same amount for the return trip. Exact fare is required as no change is given. Both dollar bills and coins are accepted.

  • Exit the Newberry Library via its Walton Street entrance. The #22 Clark & Walton bus stop is right out front, towards the Northwest Corner which is towards your right. There is another bus stop out front, so make sure you are standing by the #22 bus stop sign.
  • Take the #22 Clark bus going towards Howard for 6 stops. Exit the bus at Clark & North. The entrance to the Chicago History Museum is about 75 feet to your left.
    • The bus stops only when a stop is requested. You can see which stop is next on the screen at the front of the bus. When Clark & North appears on the screen you will need to pull the cord above the windows or press the stop button by the bus doors to request the bus to stop if someone has not done so already.

Return Trip from Chicago History Museum to the Newberry Library

  • Cross to the other side of Clark Street from the museum to pick up the #22 bus going towards Harrison. The #22 bus stop is located on the corner of Clark & North.
  • Take the #22 bus 6 stops. Get off at Clark & Delaware. The Newberry Library will be kitty corner from where you exit the bus.
    • The bus stops only when a stop is requested. You can see which stop is next on the screen at the front of the bus. When Clark & Delaware appears on the screen you will need to pull the cord above the windows or press the stop button by the bus doors to request the bus to stop if someone has not done so already.
