PDA Event: Why Do I Stay? -- The DEI Perspective

"Hopefulness and cautious optimism You are not alone..BIPOC librarians struggle to stay in the profession..it’s normal. "

Facilitated by Twanna Hodge, "Why Do I Stay --The DEI Perspective" is a follow up to popular series "Why I Left the Profession --DEI Perspective." This new series takes a closer look at resiliency and optimism in the face of many obstacles and challenges.  

Sample questions include: 

  • Why do I stay in the librarian profession?  
  • What advice do they have for newer BIPOC librarians who are contemplating leaving?
  • How do I deal with adversity and setbacks?  
  • What do they feel has changed in the profession over the years in terms of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and what proactive steps are needed for the future?

Panelists:

Ray Pun (he/him) has been in the LIS field for over 15 years. Currently, Ray is the librarian at the Alder Graduate School of Education, a teacher's education program in California where he supports all library functions and services and teaches research methods. Ray is the Immediate Past President of the Asian Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA) and the current President of the Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA).
 
K.C. Boyd is currently a school librarian with the District of Columbia Public Schools System.  She is a second-generation educator and holds Master’s degrees in Library Information Science, Media Communications, and Education Leadership.  Boyd is currently the national 2022 School Library Journal, “Librarian of the Year.” 
She is an active committee member for the American Library Association Chapter Council representing Washington D.C., and EveryLibrary Institute/Advisory Boards. 

Rebecca Hankins, CA, MLIS, is the Wendler Endowed Professor and a certified archivist/librarian at Texas A&M University.  She received her graduate (terminal) degree from Louisiana State University. She has been at Texas A&M University since 2003, receiving tenure in 2010 and promoted to Full Professor in 2019.
