PDA Event: Building a Sustaining Content Maintenance Schedule Through Summer LibGuides Challenges

Tuesday, September 9, 2025 - 12:00pm to 1:00pm

It’s long been discussed in the literature that LibGuides come with a mighty double-edged sword: they’re easy enough to create that any librarian can do it. This leads to a proliferation of web content that is poorly maintained. Reasons for this come from a lethal combination of lack of time and lack of knowledge. James Henry Smith at Indiana University Libraries has worked in collaboration with various partners to create annual Summer LibGuides Challenges that addresses these reasons and more.

This session will explore how collaborations across the library can build ongoing support for often overlooked web content maintenance projects.

Presenter:

James Henry Smith is the Discovery and User Experience Librarian at Indiana University Bloomington. There they work with a team of librarians and developers to design and maintain a host of digital resources including their institution’s online catalog, EBSCO Discovery Services, and Springhare products. Before this role, they worked as the Information Literacy Librarian for Online Learning at the same institution. James Henry completed their MLS from Indiana University Bloomington in 2022.
