Announcements

  • DePaul and Eastern Illinois University undergoing layoffs that will impact library staff.
  • Noted announcements about vendors:
    • Noted the Baker & Taylor collapse
    • From the EBSCO email: Clarivate/ProQuest announced they will stop supporting new sales of perpetual e-books on June 30, 2026. As such, we have made the decision to discontinue EBSCO eBooks participation in Clarivate’s OASIS and Rialto platforms as of June 30, 2026.
  • Upcoming webinars of interest:
    • Impromptu GOBI webinar: On Monday, November 3 at 11:00 a.m., Carol Seiler of EBSCO will talk with Ted Schwitzner of CARLI about the GOBI-Alma integration and the use of the GOBI API. Topics will include the setup and integration for the GOBI API along with basics on use. Additional topics may include discussion of GOBI MARC services and physical processing. The meeting will be held in Teams, and the session will be recorded. Register via the CARLI website.
    • From Clarivate | Introducing a New and Data-Driven Approach to Collection Development: End to End Retention & Deselection Workflows. Join us for an exclusive webinar to explore the new Retention and Deselection workflows—powerful tools designed to help libraries streamline acquisitions, make smarter data-driven decisions, and collaborate more effectively. With seamless integration into Alma, Leganto, and Rapido, and trusted by over 500 academic libraries worldwide, Rialto is redefining collection development. Don’t miss this opportunity to see how your library can save time, optimize budgets, and align collection strategies with institutional priorities. Nov. 5, 10 am EST
    • EBSCO, provider of GOBI Library Services, has an event coming up that may be of interest to CARLI member libraries. Automated Holdings Load from Alma to GOBI Wednesday, November 12, 1:00 p.m. CST Learn how to keep your GOBI data updated with your current holdings using Alma functionality. The Automated Holdings Load from Alma to GOBI service allows the library to send holdings (MARC records) to add to your GOBI search. This is to help with duplication control by alerting you when you already own a title (whether or not you ordered the title from GOBI). It also aids in deduplication of DDA/EBA pools from GOBI as well as other reports available from GOBI. Currently, many libraries send their holdings using a manual process involving spreadsheets. GOBI has developed the ability to send this detail automatically from Alma to GOBI. Each library determines what to send and sets the schedule (weekly or monthly).

Discussions

  • Discussion of the CARLI Annual Meeting:
    • The slides and recordings will be linked from the meeting agenda page
    • The committee's table talk topic produced a couple discussion threads, one on how some libraries find it essential, and one about the effect of pricing on library budgets.
    • The committee wanted to encourage further discussion on OCLC pricing and use is desired, with recommendations about generating a survey for institutions to supply answers and get broader coverage than just meeting attendees.
  • Subcommittee Updates:
    • Reparative Cataloging (Stephanie, Ellen, and C.J.) shared updates to work developing a sample inclusive/reparative cataloging and harmful language disclaimer. They asked for feedback from committee members.
    • Outreach (Colleen, Victoria, and Leslie) recapped work done by the subcommittee in 2024-2025. They discussed efforts to develop a survey or form to get information on small library needs and interests, and they specified that the scope for "small" will begin with institutions under 1,000 FTE students.
    • Education/outreach programming (Victoria, Gail & Jen) provided an update on efforts to find a space for an in person meeting. Four speakers have been identified from other calls for presenters. What other content should the committee provide?
    • E-Resources (Melissa, Colleen, Ted, Jen) gave an update on comparisons between Alma's "brief level rules" and "bib rank" as ways to evaluate the completeness of bibliographic records. Bib rank uses a fixed formula set by Ex Libris. Brief rules may be implemented by CARLI to specifications of the committee.
    • Acquisitions Working Group (Gail, Kavita, and Jen) has not met yet.
  • Discussion on acquisitions systems: The committee shared information and observations from recent news and webinars and news on GOBI, Mosaic, and Rialto.
