Illinois SCOERs Workshops

As part of CARLI's commitment to the Support for the Creation of Open Educational Resources in Illinois and thanks to the generous grant CARLI and the University of Illinois System received from the United States Department of Education's Fund for the Improvement of Post Secondary Education (FIPSE) we have created this page to highlight the workshops designed by the Illinois SCOERs/CARLI Team in order to develop expertise in a wide area of subject related to the creation of Open Educational Resources.

Illinois SCOERs sub-grant awardees are strongly encouraged to attend all the workshops that impact the position they hold on the grant. As one goal of the grant is to develop and spread expertise in OER creation, all awardees and CARLI Governing Members are invited to attend and watch the workshops. The workshops are designed to build on skills learned in the previous workshop. If you were unable to attend, we strongly recommend watching them in the order they appear here.

Illinois SCOERs workshops and other meetings, including registration information (converted into Central Time Zone) will be added to the CARLI events calendar and will also be announced to CARLI email lists.


Getting started with your 3D printer, August 28, 2023

Elisandro Cabada, Emerging Technology and Immersive Scholarship Librarian, at the Grainger Engineering Library and IDEA Lab Digital Scholarship Center, leads a general introduction to 3D printing to aid in setting up your workspace, learning best practices for maintaining your equipment and supplies, and finding out what the expectations are for each grant project 3D printing coordinator. See below under Tools of the Trade for recommendations from Alex and instructions for your first assignment to download the Cura slicer program.



Printing your first 3d object, September 5th, 2023

Elisandro Cabada, Emerging Technology and Immersive Scholarship Librarian, at the Grainger Engineering Library and IDEA Lab Digital Scholarship Center, leads the second of his sessions on 3D printing designed for Illinois SCOERs awardees. This session is open to ALL CARLI members interested in 3D printing. In addition, you will learn how to “slice” your 3D models into 3D printable objects using the free and easy to use Cura software. You will receive a demo of the slicing software as well as on finding free 3D printable objects online. Alex ends the session with information on your first printing assignment to help get you started.

3D Printing Suggestions from Alex

You will find this video helpful when first unboxing and setting up your printer for the first time.

Your 1st Homework Assignment -Download and Install Slicer Software for your Prusa

A reminder from our first Illinois SCOERs session, please download and install Cura on the workstation you plan to use with your 3D printer. This is the “slicing” software you will need to convert a 3D model into a 3D printable object. We will be going through how to use the software during our next session.

Recommendations for additional supplies and tools

During our first session, we learned there are some additional supplies and tools that will help you with your 3D printer. I have compiled a list in Amazon but of course you should utilize whatever purchasing options are available to you.

  • SD Card: 3D Printers may only be able to read specific types of SD cards, make sure your SD card is 32GB or under. If your printer came with an SD card already, I suggest you use that one.
    • To store and organize your SD cards, consider printing an SD card holder.
  • SD Card Reader Dock: This will allow you to easily save 3D print files from your computer to an SD card that you can then insert into your printer to print)
  • 2 Gallon Size Ziploc Bags: To store your filament once you open it. You can get whatever sealable bags you can find but 2 gallon is the best size to fit the full spool).
    • Once you open a filament spool and store it in your sealed bag, make sure to write on the spool or bag the date you opened it. It helps you see what spools have been opened the longest, which may encourage you to use that before opening more spools.
  • Rechargeable Silica Gel Packets: Once you open a spool of filament, it will begin absorbing humidity and will become brittle overtime. Once you open a spool, make sure to keep it in a Ziploc bag filled with silica gel packets that will absorb humidity. I encourage you to get the packets that change color as they absorb humidity so that you know it is time to switch out the gel packets once they are full saturated. I also recommend getting silica packets that can be “recharged” following product instructions (typically involves using your oven or microwave). This allows you to reactivate the silica and use it again.
    • There are also “dryer box” units you can purchase. These are nice and will prolong the life of your opened spools, however they can only hold on spool at a time. If you do end up purchasing a dryer box, make sure you get one that can accommodate 1.7mm filament since that is the size of filament purchased for your printer.
  • Cleaning supplies: Use these supplies to keep your printer clean
    • Isopropyl Alcohol: Damp a small cloth or paper towel with alcohol and wipe down the printer bed between uses, especially if you end up needing to use adhesive to help keep your object attached to the printer bed while printing (more on adhesion during our second session on August 9th. You don’t need to get 90%+ proof, 70% should be sufficient but higher concentrations will also work if you already have it.
    • Canned Air: Use canned air to clean off your printer weekly, this will help prevent buildup of filament particulates and dust which can degrade your printer overtime. You can also use a small air blower or vacuum cleaner (it is generally easier to use air duster than a vacuum since it can be harder to get to the hard to reach parts of the printer).
  • Finishing Supplies: To help in “finishing” your objects and to help during the 3D printing process, consider the following simple tools. These are included an exemplars but you can get anything similar
    • Spatula: This will help you get your finished objects off the printer bed.
    • Glue Stick: You should have received a small glue stick with your printer supplies, otherwise, consider a glue stick, it will help when you need extra adhesion to bind your 3D object to the bed during printing. Another trick I have seen others use is hairspray but I caution you against this since hairspray is flammable and leaves a film that can be hard to clean.
      • Wire Cutter: You will be clipping and cutting the filament often, use a wire cutter to cut the tip of the filament before inserting it into the printer. You will want to cut the tip of the filament into a sharp point to help guide the filament through the extruder head properly.
    • Long precision tweezer: You will be using these often to pull debris from the print bed while your object prints. It is similar to frosting a cake, sometimes you end up with little extra bits of frosting that hang on the frosting tool or that drip on the cake, tweezers help you keep the print bed free of filament debris not attached to your print object. There are little threads of filament that pop up now and then.
    • Tip: You can find tool kits that include many of the finishing supplies listed above.
