A Huxy Bunch, eh! – CARLI Digital Collections Featured Image

From John Jochman Album (Benedictine University) in CARLI Digital Collections.

Benedictine University's John Jochman Album offers a fascinating glimpse into student life circa 1917-1923, at which time the suburban campus included both a high school and a college. John Jochman, who was a student at both St. Procopius College (as Benedictine University was then known) and St. Procopius Academy, was the owner of this photo album, which features photographs of the schools' students, staff, and campus, as well as teams, clubs, and outings. My favorite selections from the collection are the more casual portraits, those shots of students goofing around and just being kids.

This image, "A Huxy Bunch, eh?" is one of 27 images with the subject term "Humorous pictures." The set-up for the shot was likely no small feat, unless the students just happened to be carrying a table and other furniture outside of Benedictine Hall, and this is just one example of a group of boys striking a silly pose with whatever props were handy. Life on St. Procopius' Lisle campus undoubtedly wasn't always as fun as these images might imply, but if this collection is any indication, I imagine John Jochman reflected fondly on his time at S.P.C.
