Head of Metadata and Access - Illinois Institute of Technology

The Chicago-Kent College of Law Library seeks an enthusiastic, creative, and service-oriented law librarian as the Head of Metadata and Access. The Head of Metadata and Access reports to the Director of the Law Library. The Head of Metadata and Access provides leadership and oversees the daily operation of access and technical services in the Law Library. This position has administrative and supervisory responsibilities and collaborates with other law librarians to develop, expand, and provide library services for students and faculty. The position is a full-time position and is available immediately.

The Chicago-Kent College of Law Library in the Conviser Law Center is located in downtown Chicago, one of the largest legal markets in the country. The Law Library advances the academic and scholarly success of students and faculty by providing future-focused training and professional research assistance to a diverse community. Education & Experience

  • MLS (or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited graduate program.
  • Three years minimum of progressively responsible experience in a cataloging role.
  • Prior experience supervising full-time, part-time, or hourly staff.

Required Knowledge & Skills

  • Working knowledge of integrated library systems and experience effectively using or managing acquisition and cataloging functions.
  • Working knowledge of current metadata standards such as MARC, FRBR, Resource Description and Access (RDA), Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), Library of Congress Classification (LCC), and other emerging standards.
  • Experience cataloging physical and electronic materials using a cataloging utility such as OCLC or other shared data repository.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise, train, and manage library staff.
  • Ability to respond effectively to changing needs and priorities, show initiative and flexibility, and thrive in a changing environment.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic environment.

Preferred Knowledge & Skills

  • Experience in a law library setting.
  • Experience with the Alma integrated library management system.
  • Experience working in a library consortia environment with a networked catalog.
  • Familiarity with data manipulation tools such as MarcEdit and/or API applications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Establishes and monitors workflows related to acquisitions, cataloging, online catalog maintenance, circulation, reserves, I-Share and interlibrary loans, and physical space oversight. Ensures database integrity in support of these functions, staying up-to-date with new features and functions.
  • Trains, supervises, and directs the daily activities of library assistants and student employees. Sets priorities and goals and provides training to ensure that staff can effectively meet the requirements of their jobs.
  • Oversees and participates in the ongoing maintenance and quality control of acquisitions and cataloging records, including ordering materials and performing original and copy-cataloging physical and electronic materials in a cooperative cataloging environment. Support the delivery of digital resources through the library’s integrated library system using vendor-supplied records.
  • Participates in library planning and policymaking, developing and promoting the growth of the library’s services to students and faculty. Compiles data and prepares analytical reports as necessary. Serves on the university-wide Alma/Primo working group.
