Decisions

  • November minutes were approved with a minor URL edit from Elizabeth Clarage (CARLI).
  • Two Controlled Digital Lending subcommittees have been formed, one to interview people who expressed willingness to follow up and another to work on a resource guide.
  • Interview Subgroup: Arlie, Lesley, Ashley, Cynthia
  • Resource Guide Subgroup: Krysta, Nestor, Caitlin, Chad

Tasks Assigned

  • Minutes taken by Ashley McMullin (DePaul University).
  • Cynthia Kremer will share an Excel version of the Controlled Digital Lending survey response via email and Box.
  • Arlie Sims will review form permissions to anyone with link can view.
  • Cynthia will reach out to Jessica to see which subcommittee she wants to join.
  • Denise and Elizabeth will schedule the subcommittee meetings. Subcommittees will meet and get started before the next full committee meeting.

Announcements

  • Member Announcements:
    • Caitlin Archer-Helke (Saint Xavier University): Director of SXU is retiring December 31. Caitlin Archer-Helke will become Interim Director, initially estimated for 90 days. SXU will be open the day after Christmas and after New Years. A Provost search is ongoing at SXU.
    • Cynthia Kremer (Joliet Junior College): Spring semester is anticipated to be similar to fall semester. Lower numbers than pre-COVID for gate counts and services. The college is offering fewer in-person course options than they offered prior to the pandemic.
    • Krista Bowers Sharpe (Western Illinois University): New Dean of Libraries, Hector Maymi-Sugranes will begin January 4th. New e-Resources and Collection Librarian began in November. This position was vacant from the Primo VE migration to present. COVID policies will remain in place for spring semester.
    • Arlie Sims (Columbia College Chicago): Things are stable, campus is open as usual. Masking and social distancing requirements are in place so they cannot use their instruction room, unless a class is willing to split.
    • Ashley McMullin and Christine McClure (DePaul University): First two weeks of the new term moved to remote to prepare for winter quarter beginning January 3. Hiring for an IDEA Coordinator. AUL position will be posted sometime in winter.
  • CARLI Announcements:
    • Tentative events planned, article discussion event, annual instruction showcase. The Commercial Products Committee will do an event on accessibility of library e-resources.
    • Upcoming events
    • The ACRL Trends and Statistics presentation was recorded and slides are available on the CARLI website. Presentation included how the pandemic has impacted libraries over the past year.
    • The Preservation Committee will offer a session on Working with Fire Professionals
    • OER Faculty Workshops can be marketed to Faculty for January, February and March
    • CARLI e-Book program for FY23 crowdfunding message went out to several CARLI email lists Library Directors, Collections and  Content Group, I-Share Liaisons Group, E-Resources Contacts. As pricing information was included in the proposal, this information is not available on the website. Informational sessions will be coming up in January.
    • Illinois SCOERS program. CARLI grant for the creation of 8 OER with maximum reward of $60K

Discussion

  • Controlled Digital Lending Survey Responses:
    • Thank you to Arlie for creating the form. We have received 30 responses. Reviewed the form and responses received thus far. Nice to find a new topic that people are interested in.
      • 20% have used CDL
      • Interest in low-cost tech to support CDL; justification; how to explain books can’t be used in print; how to set it up; copyright considerations; how to maintain; cost; emergency use vs sustainable long-term; staff time to digitize full text; cost vs usage; hasn’t been tested in courts.
      • 37% willing to speak with someone about it.
      • Next steps:
        • 80% shared experiences and best practices
        • 80% resource guide
        • 40% programming
        • (all other responses were limited)
    • Everyone is encouraged to review the responses.
  • Next steps: two subcommittees, one to interview people who expressed willingness to follow up and another to work on a resource guide.
    • Contacting those who responded to the survey could lead to a program or panel.
