CARLI Public Services Committee Meeting: January 25, 2021

Decisions

  • December minutes approved with no edits.
  • Committee will host another informal discussion tentatively scheduled for Friday, April 23rd at 11am.

Announcements

  • Member Announcements:
    • Harwig (College of DuPage) – Institution maintaining status quo for spring semester with limited services on campus and in the library.
    • Archer-Helke (Saint Xavier University) – Institution in a holding pattern; most are on campus and library is open except for the stacks and study rooms.
    • Kahl (Illinois State University) – Library building to reopen February 1 with reduced hours; circulation desk will reopen and reference desk will remain virtual.
    • Bowers Sharpe (Western Illinois University) – Classes resumed Jan. 19th, but library services remain much the same as fall semester, online-only reference services and only WIU ID-holders allowed in the building.
    • Bastian (Illinois Central College) – Virtual-only services for the library, so no changes from last semester.
    • Osorio (Northern Illinois University) – Library services staying the same as las semester with the exception of laptop services growing from 40 machines to 400.
    • Kremer (Joliet Junior College) – Same as last semester, with tech labs (automotive, etc.) being held in person, all other classes online. Library services continue as before but  library hours are now aligned with other in-person services on campus.
    • Wolfgang (Saint John’s College of Nursing) – Classes remain online except for clinicals still being held in-house in hospital. Library remains open.
  • CARLI Announcements:
    • CARLI staff continues to work from home for foreseeable future.
    • CARLI calendar filled with many events, including options for Primo VE open office hours.
    • Soon to be added to CARLI calendar: OER workshops aimed at faculty members to be held Feb. 24 from 11-1 and the same workshop again to be held March 23 from 11-1.

Tasks Assigned

  • Minutes taken by Lesley Wolfgang.
  • Cynthia Kremer will organize PSC subcommittee on compiling informal discussion notes and compiling them for possible publication as a column, either in Internet Reference Services Quarterly (IRSQ) or in another publication. She will also contact Xiaotian Chen at Bradley University regarding his suggestion regarding the Internet Reference Services Quarterly publication opportunity since Jessica Bastian, whom Xiaotian contacted originally, will be out on leave soon.
  • Elizabeth Clarage will send out evaluation link to all informal discussion participants from last week’s event.

Discussion

  • “The Pandemic Made Me Do It: Changing Public Services” Zoom event
    • Committee discussed the heavy use of chat management during the session as opposed to people wanting to speak and the  various levels of participation by attendees.
    • Evaluation – Keep as is or redesign? Decision to keep as is in order to inform future informal discussion event planning and send out ASAP.
    • Should the PSC hold another event? Yes—tentatively planned for Friday, April 23rd from 11:00am-12:00pm.
  • PSC Annual Project for 2020-2021
    • Discussed feedback from Board of Directors meeting; PSC committee to continue.
    • Wording in draft document rearranged.
    • Next steps: New language in charge change to be submitted by March 1.
  • Other possible projects: Committee decided to tentatively schedule another online informal discussion since last week’s event was well-received. Will wait to decide on exact content until evaluations come back with participants’ suggestions.

The Public Services Committee will meet next on February 22, 2021 from 12:00-1:00pm.
