Decisions

  • May meeting minutes approved.
  • Open Illinois / Open Educational Resources Webpage Updates:
    • The sidebar will be updated as noted.
      • Background Readings will have two subheadings: OER and Open Pedagogy.
        • These two subheadings will link to the same page that will contain anchors in the text.
        • Information about Inclusive Access will also be included on the Background Readings page but not highlighted as a topic on the sidebar. Information from OhioNet and SPARC will be included on the topic.
      • Two topics under the heading OER Repositories and Publishing Initiatives will be renamed.
        • Textbooks will be changed to Textbooks and OER Search Engines.
        • Other will be changed to OER Arranged by Academic Disciplines.
    • Much of what is currently located in Sample OER Sites – Sites organized by Academic Discipline will move to OER Arranged by Academic Disciplines.

Announcements

  • Member Announcements:
    • Janet (University of Illinois at Chicago) – She presented two OER presentations that had over 70 attendees each. UIC has hired teacher assistants to help move courses online.
    • Linda (Western Illinois University) – Her last day is June 30.
    • Elizabeth (McHenry County College) – The bookstore is rebranding to MCC Store as their institution is focusing on OER
  • CARLI Announcements:
    • Alma/Primo
      • June 24 is the launch date.
      • At its June meeting, the CARLI Board approved the proposal to stop fines accrued during COVID-19 closures. CARLI staff will extend due dates in Alma for every I-Share library for all items with a due date between January 1, 2020, and September 30, 2020. These items will be assigned a new due date of October 1, 2020.
    • Wiley ebooks will soon be widely announced.
    • There will be an all committee meeting to start the new fiscal year. The date for that meeting is not yet set. Committees may plan their first meeting after the all committee meeting takes place.

Discussion

  • Brief discussion about faculty procedures for ordering textbooks came up during announcements. Procedures varied by institution, and an OER alternative is not always presented to faculty as an alternative.
  • CARLI OER Virtual Training
    • Janet, Sue, and Elizabeth met to plan training.
    • Format will be three one hour Zoom sessions and contain much of what was in the OTN Train-the-Trainers.
    • Trial run in July.
    • The Task Force discussed recording the sessions and determined that recording a content portion or presentation may work but not to record discussion portions to encourage participation.
    • Sessions will incorporate a flipped learning model.
    • Participants will have homework to complete so that they can participate in the in-person (virtual) discussion and activities.
    • The plan is to create the content from the OTN training materials, the Certificate in OER Librarianship course materials, and SPARC LIB OER training materials as they all have CC-BY licenses.
  • The Task Force discussed updates and changes to the Open Illinois webpages.

Next Meeting

CARLI staff will send a poll to determine the first meeting of the OER Committee
