  • March 12, 2026, minutes were approved.
  • The committee will update the Continuing Education content for the OER Course: Understanding and Promoting OER and the OER Faculty Workshop before the workshops are run again in the fall.
  • The committee will review the Continuing Education content for all programs for accessibility.

Announcements

  • Member Announcements:
    • Kelly Hallisy (DePaul University): DePaul threw a celebration for the Illinois State Library OER projects completed at DePaul University.
  • CARLI Announcements:
    • LibreTexts trainings, hosted by Michele, are upcoming. Topics include:
      • Signing up for LibreTexts
      • Using the platform
      • H5P in LibreTexts
    • ILSOS/ISL OER Grants
      • The grant projects are wrapping up.
    • Illinois SCOERs
      • There is still a small amount of funds left.
      • CARLI staff are looking to translate one OER text into Spanish with the funds.
      • A page documenting and linking to all the published Illinois SCOERs projects in one place is in progress.
    • Upcoming OER PDA webinars
      • April 16: Copyright and OER Creation
    • Nicole attended a presentation and learned about the 2025 Virginia Course Materials Survey.
      • They had new questions for their student survey this year on inclusive access.
      • Only 33% of students knew that they could opt out of open access.
      • It’s good we have included a question about textbook billing in the faculty survey for the fall.
      • Lack of transparency related to inclusive access cost is causing students to lose trust in their institutions.
      • Committee members shared that this mirrors the experiences of institutions across the country.
      • The vendors make it as difficult as possible for students to opt-out and instructors don’t do a great job of letting students know that they can opt-out, so opt-out rates are miniscule.
      • Additionally, inclusive access is moving away from being just the textbook - there are a lot of assignments, quizzes, and supporting materials that students can’t participate in if they opt out.
    • Nicole met with Lily Dubach who has presented for CARLI in the past.
      • The committee agrees that we should invite Lily to talk about her work with AI and OER.
    • Call for volunteers for CARLI committees
      • If members know of people who might have interest in this group, they are welcome to share the call.

Discussion

  • CARLI Member OER Initiative
    • A call went out to the committee asking for reviewers.
    • Serving as a reviewer is not a requirement for committee members, but you are still welcome to volunteer.
  • Continuing Education for FY26
    • Committee discussion about setting up a timeline to review what is in the workshop content so that they can determine it is still reflective of the committee’s intent, identify if there are things missing, and ensure the slides are accessible when sharing them out.
      • The committee agrees that this sounds like a good summer project before programming in the fall.
      • Summer projects usually take place in May, June, or July and are dependent on committee members’ availability.
      • Review of the content in the past has typically been done in small teams and has included people who have taught the course recently.
      • Members are encouraged to review as context experts; all programs are fair game for any members – no need to have taught the course recently.
      • Sometimes the committee waits to do the updates until OEN Engage has new PowerPoints and updates, which would push the timeline to later in the summer as OEN Engage is typically late June/July.
      • Open Pedagogy Workshop was reviewed and updated last year and again when it was done this year, so it does not need to be reviewed for content, only accessibility.
      • Understanding and Promoting Open Educational Resources and the OER Faculty Workshop have not been updated recently from a content perspective.
      • Jayna, Robin, and Zach volunteered to update content and will revisit the timeline for the project at the May meeting.
      • Elizabeth will make sure the current versions of the Continuing Education PowerPoints are available to all committee members to review.
    • The committee discussed timing for the next subject specific OER meetings.
      • There was interest in hosting the Humanities one again because of low attendance the first time.
      • Zach and Mackenzie will plan to offer the Humanities meet-up in the early part of the fall semester as that might be when more faculty are available.
      • The STEM group recommended meeting again in six months.
  • Illinois Course Materials Survey: Faculty Perspective
    • Thank you to the subcommittee that provided a lot of comments and suggestions and shared great questions.
    • The subcommittee reviewed a lot of different surveys and questions to pull together the current survey draft.
    • It’s been shared with CARLI staff to review the week of March 30 and they will add final thoughts this week (the week of April 6) before sharing it with the CARLI Governance Board.
    • CARLI staff will reach out to the group once comments have all been collected to see if we should meet again or how we should move forward.
    • Timeline recap: we’re hoping to announce the survey to the membership over the summer with a launch in the fall.
  • ILOE Update
    • Last spring semester meeting will be 4/24 from 10am-12pm. All are welcome.
    • ILOE subcommittees are currently meeting and working.
    • Future ILOE updates will not be a verbal report out instead the CARLI OER Committee meeting agendas will include a perpetual link to the Google drive folder with the ILOE meeting minutes.
    • If there are items from the minutes that are of interest, or other bigger ILOE updates, they can be added to a meeting agenda for discussion.
  • Open Illinois Hub Promotion
    • Dates have been scheduled for the Open Illinois Hub Add-a-thons.
    • The early session is scheduled for April 23: 10-11 a.m. is for the committee only and Nicole sent the invite through the OER Committee email list.
      • Lauren is leading the 10 a.m. session and will record brief instructions of how-to add resources to the OER Commons and the Open Illinois Hub.
    • The later session is scheduled for April 23: 1-2 p.m. and is open to everyone in CARLI – register via Zoom if you’re interested in attending.
      • The facilitator for the later session will provide direction to attendees every fifteen minutes.
      • Joslyn will facilitate the second session if Lauren is unable to attend.
      • Facilitation for the session includes having someone share the slides and answer questions.
    • CARLI staff will send out another message to the CARLI OER email list to promote the event as only four people are registered so far.
  • CARLI Support for Member Continuing Education/Certificate Programs
    • CARLI still has funds available for the Creative Commons Certificate Program.
    • CARLI staff will put a reminder in the newsletter.
  • CARLI OER Champions Award
    • Michele will send an email out to the volunteers Brandon, Kelly and Lauren to schedule a meeting to discuss.
  • CARLI OER Committee Annual Report
    • Shelly has been working on the report so far and CARLI staff have added a couple of comments.
    • As the report looks to be in an earlier draft form, committee members will make comments on the draft between now and the May meeting and review the Annual Report at the May meeting.
