Discussion

• Proposed OER Committee Charge Updates
  • Revised charge expands beyond the previous focus on professional development to capture all committee work, including advocacy, addressing challenges, and strengthening OER infrastructure.
  • The committee voted to approve the revised charge, Michele will bundle the approved charge with the boilerplate second paragraph and forward to the CARLI Board for approval.
• Continuing Education for Fiscal Year 2026
  • Agreed to offer each workshop once in the spring semester:
    • OER Course: Understanding and Promoting OER (3-week course, 1.5 hours per week, primarily for librarians)
    • OER Faculty Workshop (single session)
    • Open Pedagogy Workshop (single session, open to both librarians and faculty rather than offering separate sessions)
  • Chats
    • Proposed Topics:
      • Engaging Faculty in OER Conversations and Beyond (Shelly volunteered to moderate, tentatively scheduled for November)
      • Accessibility in OER (Lauren volunteered to lead, suggested for February to align with fall semester accessibility deadline)
      • AI and OER (Robin and anyone else interested: creation, adaptation, copyright issues, and auxiliary materials)
      • A Joint session with Public Services Committee on student belonging. This is tentatively scheduled for March/April.
  • Open Education Week (March 2-6, 2026)
    • Planned Activities:
      • Open Pedagogy Workshop on Wednesday or Thursday (Kelly volunteered to lead)
      • Community chats on Tuesday and Thursday
      • Highlighting OER being created in Illinois, organized by subject area 
      • Creative Commons licensing workshop with Sara Benson as a possible instructor.
  • New Programming: Virtual Faculty and Instructor OER Meetups
    • Hearing about CARLI OER projects and developments.
    • Creating space for teaming up on shared goals.
    • Start with broader categories and separate STEM from health sciences. Math might be broken out separately.
    • Faculty availability varies widely across institutions and disciplines.
    • Timing for first meetup: possibly late November or January (avoiding October due to ILA conference, CARLI annual meeting, and Open Ed Week).
    • Plan to host 3-4 virtual meetups to start.
• Statement on Funding
  • Tabled until the next meeting.
• Faculty OER Survey
  • Meeting will focus on:
    • Reviewing and confirming survey logistics and key questions;
    • Finalizing survey duration;
    • Identifying questions from the 2023 Illinois course material survey that could be reframed for faculty/instructor audience; and 
    • Existing faculty/instructor survey models.
• ILOE Update
  • Currently confirming co-chairs for committees.
  • Developing committee charges.
  • General meeting planned for November.
  • Contact Lauren with any questions.
• Open Illinois Hub Promotion
  • Promoting the Open Illinois Hub and improving documentation for resource submission.
  • Two-step process: Adding resources to institution group page, then getting them added to the Open Illinois Hub.
  • Need for improved discoverability through better use of tags and metadata.
  • Tag by specific grant projects or just by subject/discipline?
  • Committee will develop talking points about tagging and metadata structure.
• CARLI Support for Member Continuing Education/Certificate Programs
  • Reviewed CARLI-supported continuing education programs. 
  • Available Programs:
    • OEN Certificate in Open Education Librarianship
    • OEN Certificate in Open Pedagogy
    • Creative Commons Certificate Program

  • Annual Meeting
    • October 21, 2025.This year's meeting celebrates CARLI's 20th anniversary.
  • Illinois Library Association Conference
    • The OEN/CARLI Meetup at ILA Conference is scheduled for October 15, 2025, from 3:00-4:00 p.m. 
  • Public Policy Committee - Legislation Proposal
    • The committee adopted OER funding as one of their legislative initiatives. This means:
      • If a bill is proposed, the committee will support it.
      • Hopefully a measure will be included in the Secretary of State's budget again,
  • OER Grant Programs
    • $300,000 CARLI Board OER Grant Allocation
      • Will be issued as projects through the University of Illinois using CARLI funds.
      • Can include OER education, not just OER creation.
      • There will be some restrictions on how funds must be used.
      • November meeting devoted to developing the call for funding, deliverables, rubrics.
      • We can share draft documents before the meeting, rather than drafting by committee. Examples can be compiled in a Box folder, from Open Oregon, Illinois State Library grants, etc. 
    • Illinois SCOERs Grant Program
      • Access LibreTexts to those institutions which opted-in has been extended through 2028, trainings for faculty scheduled into December.
      • No-cost extension finalized with small additional funding pockets for some awardees.
    • ILSOS/ISL OER Grants
      • Projects well underway and finishing up.
  • Pressbooks Update
    • Pressbooks status needs to be checked.
  • Open Ed Conference
    • Michelle requested that committee members notify her if they are presenting or attending so they can connect.
