Decisions

  • November 9, 2023 minutes approved.
  • Lauren Kosrow and Dorinne Banks volunteered to create and send out an invitation via the CARLI OER list to share programming and events for Open Ed week 2024.
  • Christina Norton volunteered to lead a February OER Community Chat on dealing with setbacks.
  • Dee Anna Phares will lead an April OER Community Chat on Open Pedagogy.
  • Edits and updates to CARLI OER website should be completed by February 15, 2024.
  • Christina Norton, Lauren Kosrow, and Dorinne Banks will complete update of “Getting Started Toolkit” in preparation for Open Education Week by December 22, 2023.
  • The Committee will revisit potential programming for Open Ed week in the January meeting.

Announcements

  • Member Announcements:
    • Dee Anna Phares (Northern Illinois University): Announced the LOEX 2024 call for lightning talk and poster proposals.
    • Kim Hale (Columbia College Chicago): Discussed the contingent faculty strike at CCC and its impact on the campus community and ongoing OER work; the library has played an important role in supporting students.
    • Shelly McDavid (Southern Illinois University Edwardsville): Shared that she and her colleague, Joe Kohlburn (OER/Scholarly Communication Librarian at SIUE), were selected for the 2024 OEN Certificate in Open Education Librarianship Cohort and were granted registration support by CARLI.
  • CARLI Announcements:
    • CARLI Annual Meeting
      • OER Table Talk Update
        • Lauren Kosrow attended virtually; Dan Matthews attended in person. Discussions about OER at small schools, building sustainable programs/infrastructure, faculty compensation for open work, and pooling resources.
        • Suggestions from participants that CARLI can help through fostering collaboration, providing training, gathering statistics and data, and leveraging the Illinois Hub.  
      • Greg McCormick (Illinois State Library) gave update on state funding.
    • Secretary of State Funding ISL
      • CARLI has planned informational Zoom sessions about the State Library’s grant program for January 9, 2024 at 9 a.m and January 17, 2024 at 3 p.m.
        • Michele Leigh will be leading these sessions which will guide potential applicants through the specific process or discuss general suggestions when applying for a grant, depending on available information.
        • Lauren Kosrow suggested the committee develop some materials to help answer commons questions for applicants.
        • Kim Hale suggested creating a document in Box to put questions, suggestions, or FAQs related to the grant.
      • Update on application
        • No additional information has been released about application procedures or deadlines since the CARLI Directors’ Letter in November.
        • Elizabeth Clarage noted that libraries would be the entities applying for funding and that beginning January 1, 2024 applicants would need to certify their eligibility for grants.
        • Dorinne Banks inquired about whether there were restrictions on how the grants might be spent, i.e. could funds be used to support open textbook reviews or start an OER awareness program.
        • Anne Craig noted that the details will be clearer once the application is released, further reminding of the importance of legislative intent—which may mean a focus on adoption and creation of OER and the gathering of data (such as cost savings for students).
        • CARLI OER Committee may support application review.
    • Open Education Network (OEN) sent out calls to participate in the OEN Certificate in Open Educational Practices Program
      • One team, from a CARLI institution, was accepted: librarian, Barb Anderson, and faculty member, Edward Green (Roosevelt University).
    • CARLI Office will be closed from December 22, 2023-January 1, 2024 for the holidays.

Discussion

  • Continuing Education:
    • Understanding and Promoting Open Educational Resources:
      • Lauren Kosrow and Dee Anna Phares taught the first two workshops, with the final scheduled for Monday, December 18, 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
      • Anne Cherniak and Michelle Oh, former committee members and OER Certificate holders, will be teaching February 8, 15, 22, 1:00-2:30 p.m
      • Elizabeth Nelson and Cari Didion will be teaching in May, with dates and times announced soon.
      • Melanie Armstrong and Amy Pinc will be teaching in June—dates still to be determined.
    • OER Faculty Workshop:
      • Joslyn Allison and Dan Matthews volunteered to teach sessions on February 21, 11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
      • Lauren Kosrow and Evangeline Reid will teach on February 29, 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
    • Open Pedagogy Workshop:
      • Dee Anna Phares and Chris Sweet will teach session for NIU ACM Cohort II; it is tentatively scheduled for March 22, 1:00 p.m. or 2:00 p.m., but still needs to be confirmed. [since changed to March 8, 2:30 p.m.]
    • OER Community Chats:
      • November 13, 10:00-11:00 a.m. chat on “Sustainability and Burnout” was led by Joslyn Allison leading; Shelly McDavid took notes.
        • This timely topic was well-received by those in attendance.
        • 15 people registered.
      • December 13, 1:00-2:00 p.m. chat on “Local Programming” was led by Dan Matthews leading; Christina Norton took notes.
        • The chat focused on programming, who to be in contact with, and what kinds of changes to make local programs was successful.
        • 11 people registered.
      • February: Christina Norton will lead a discussion on dealing with setbacks.
      • March: A volunteer may still be needed; in January, committee will decide whether to skip this month and focus on Open Ed week instead.
      • April: Dee Anna Phares will focus on Open Pedagogy.
      • May or June: Kim Hale suggested a topic and may lead a discussion on communication and sharing what we learned working on OER, including applying for grants.
  • Website Review:
    • Winter/Spring Sign-up
      • All members asked to sign up for at least one page to review before February meeting.
        • Members should check that links are not broken and content is up to date.
        • Any changes, notes, actions, or edits will be added to a new column Lauren Kosrow will insert into the spreadsheet.
        • Deadline to update: February 15, 2023.  
    • “Getting Started Toolkit” Subcommittee
      • Christina Norton, Lauren Kosrow and Dorinne Banks will complete work by December 22, 2023.
  • Open Education Week (March 4-8, 2024)
    • Current slate of presentation
      • Student survey data: Nicole Swanson and Lauren Kosrow—this programming will include a student panel and a discussion of the data from the survey.
        • Tentatively scheduled for March 5 at 10AM (blocking out 90 minutes).
        • Kim Hale and Lauren Kosrow will reach out to students who may be interested in participating
        • Nicole Swanson will contact Sara Benson at UIUC, who works with student government associations.
      • Michele: Illinois SCOERs round 2 & 3 recipient presentations
        • In 2023, there were three session over three days; in 2024, tentatively planning for sessions on March 4, 6, or 7 in the morning, and on March 5 in the afternoon.
    • Additional ideas and suggestions
      • Kim Hale suggested linking to other programs or organizations with Open Ed week content.
      • Nicole Swanson suggested the committee put out a call for successes across the state via Google form that would be due before Open Ed week.
        • Lauren and Dorinne will develop and send out the invite to share their OER success stories.
      • Dorinne suggested programming about the IL State Library grants; however, Elizabeth Clarage suggested that without additional information about the application or timeline, it would be difficult to plan for an event.
      • Shelly McDavid suggested the possibility of hosting a March community chat that is broad and would allow for any questions about OER.
        • Committee will revisit this suggestion and other potential programming for Open Ed week during the January meeting.
  • OEN Certificate in Open Education Librarianship
    • CARLI can support 5 people.
    • Have granted funding to 3: Julie Murphy (Illinois State University), as well as Shelly McDavid and Joe Kohlburn (Southern Illinois University Edwardsville).
  • Creative Commons Certificates:
    • CARLI can support 8 people.
    • At the time of the meeting, no new requests for reimbursement had been received.
  • Student Course Materials Affordability
    • 4671 students have responded from 30 institutions of various types.
    • CARLI staff will be sharing preliminary findings soon.
    • Survey closes on December 31, 2023.
    • February 2, 2024—CARLI will share local data.
  • OER Commons Hub:
    • Elizabeth Clarage noted that a new institutional member was added: Governors State University.
  • Illinois SCOERs: Support for the Creation of Open Educational Resources:
    • Michele Leigh reports they are collecting data, and so far have 27 responses to the student survey that assesses student reaction to the OER and compares the class to previous class that did not use OER
    • They will also have data from survey on faculty responses to using OER
