Decisions

  • January meeting minutes were approved.
  • Committee decided to draft a statement of concern voicing our opposition to the inclusive access textbook model. Dan will email the committee to coordinate.

  • Dan will email the committee to coordinate a statement of concern regarding inclusive access.
  • Tineka will take notes during the April 27 Office Hours.
  • Chris will take notes during the May 17 Office Hours.
  • Chris will ask members for OER wins on the CARLI-OER email list and share those with members during Open Education Week.

Announcements

  • Member Announcements:
    • Dan Matthews (Moraine Valley Community College) He has had interest from the Communications Department regarding open textbooks.
    • Janet Swatscheno (University of Illinois Chicago): The UIC undergraduate student government is working to offer an official faculty award for OER selected by students.
    • Chris Sweet (Illinois Wesleyan University): He spoke with student senate to discuss the value of OER.
  • CARLI Announcements:
    • Anne Craig discussed representing the UI System on a bill that Illinois Senator Bennett introduced. The bill did not go forward. Public university and community college would need to provide course resources at no cost for students who graduated from an Illinois high school. SPARC suggested looking at California and Oregon where there is state funding. “Inclusive access” model prioritizes revenue for publishers but is marketed as an equitable model.

      • March 30: CARLI OER Faculty Workshop

    • CARLI is in the midst of member crowdsourcing for a year three of consortial eBook program.

Discussion

  • Continuing Education
    • CARLI OER Course: Understanding and Promoting Open Educational Resources
      • February participants have been very engaged during the sessions.
    • CARLI OER Faculty Workshop:
      • January Workshop: There were 25 attendees. The instructors incorporated polls for a more interactive experience for participants.
    • OER Office Hours
      • Committee discussed future facilitators and note takers. Tineka will take notes in April, and Chris will take notes in May.
    • IACRL Spark Program: Open Pathways - Exploring the Intersections of Diversity Equity and Inclusion and Open Educational Resources
      • Some OER Committee members are working on this project. The focus will be showcasing the CARLI OER Commons Hub: Open Illinois.
    • Illinois Library Association Conference
      • Dan Matthews suggested submitting a proposal on the Open Illinois OER Commons Hub for the ILA Conference , in-person Oct. 18-20 at the Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont.
      • Cathy Galarza Espino suggested we also do an exhibitors’ booth.
  • Illinois SCOERs Update
  • Open Illinois – OER Commons Hub Update
    • It’s up and running! Promote usage.
    • CARLI staff are working with ISKME to renew contract.
  • OER advocacy / lobbying training session
    • Is anyone qualified to train? Anne Craig will ask via email for recommendations for academic librarians. Maybe someone on the Secretary’s staff?
  • CARLI coordinated Creative Commons Certificate program
    • In-person is still on hold. Elizabeth will check on pricing for virtual options.
  • The committee discussed Open Education Week programming.
    • Chris will send a note to the CARLI-OER email list soliciting wins & share those back to the list during Open Education Week, March 7-11.
