Decisions

  • Draft minutes of July 22, 2013 approved as official.

Minutes to be sent to group who will have 24-48 business hours to review, then they will be posted on the CARLI website.
  • Meeting was adjourned at 11:30 a.m.

Announcements

  • Joliet Junior College has received two collections related grants and is planning programs around these materials.
  • The University of Chicago has been working with direct patron borrowing for the last month with other Ivy League institutions and is working on the best method for shipping materials for this program.
  • William Rainey Harper College is using Shelflister for collection maintenance. Greenville College is as well.
  • Tom Dorst is retiring from CARLI as of October 11.
  • The CARLI Annual Meeting will be held on November 1 and highlight research conducted by staff members from CARLI libraries that emphasizes resource sharing, the effectiveness or value of consortial action, collection analysis, or that focuses on CARLI as a consortium.
  • Minutes are now expected to be posted within a week to ten days of the meeting. Minutes may have a “discussions” section to be more relevant to others outside the committee.
  • All CARLI committees are now required to submit a white paper that should be of interest to the whole CARLI membership.

Tasks Assigned

  • Pam was selected as minute taker.
  • Kim will create a draft list of topics and trends/activities for white paper and send to the group.
  • Weeding / Collection Relocation program April 2014 Group will meet before next meeting and report back.
  • Patron Driven Acquisitions – print/electronic – January/February 2014 –will meet before next meeting and report back.
  • Kim will add more copyright resources to Scholarly Communications website.
  • Kim will call David Stern, Public Services Committee chair, to get more information on his and Susan Singleton's idea of hosting a joint conference on assessment, (possibly an IACRL pre-conference forum), and will email group with overview of discussion.
  • Pam will serve as the representative for the forum on usage statistics planning committee currently being planned by the Commercial Products Committee for November 22, 2013.

Discussion

  • Committee members discussed major happenings at their libraries.
  • White paper: What are big topics we need to be thinking about; the paper needs to practical and one that can guide our continuing education offerings; we can follow up on a program beyond posting slides to share insights more broadly (e.g. keeping up with the industry as companies are merging). CARLI is recommending that writing/updating this white paper be an annual committee activity. We could have an annual brainstorming discussion and then outline a list of topics and trends with brief description of those trends and ideas for continuing education workshop and white papers.
  • The group discussed reaching out to other groups for the programs including the Commercial Products Committee for the PDA program.
  • There has been a request for CARLI committees to indicate their interest in planning an IACRL pre-conference on assessment. October 20th is deadline to submit proposal for the pre-conference to CARLI Program Planning Committee, each interested CARLI committee would work together to plan a portion of a larger pre-conference. The Collection Management is interested in finding out more about the possibility of the pre-conference. Possible idea: 5 copy recommendation, does it inform your purchasing practices?
  • The CARLI Commercial Products Committee is planning a Usage Statistics program on November 22 at UIS—would like a member of our committee to assist with the planning for program.
