Freshmen 1917 - CARLI Digital Collections Featured Image

From MC Student Life (Monmouth College) in CARLI Digital Collections.

With this Featured Image post, we welcome Monmouth College to CARLI Digital Collections! Today’s image comes from a digital collection that documents the history of this liberal arts college, the Monmouth College Student Life Collection. When Monmouth College was established in 1853, women and students of color were allowed to apply for and enroll in courses. This decision by the college’s founders is a source of pride for Monmouth, and the scrapbooks in this collection show off the legacy.

The Luella Beveridge Scrapbook reveals the life of a woman studying at a small Midwestern college in the early 20th century. Luella Beveridge started her scrapbook in September 1917 and worked on it until her untimely death in January 1920. Her younger sister Jeanette completed the book, filling its final pages with clippings of obituaries and memorials, along with records of posthumous awards for her sister and their mother, who died in 1927. This image from Luella’s scrapbook is a shot of her freshmen class in 1917 at an annual event called the “Pole Scrap.”
