Digital Humanities Librarian - Northwestern University

Northwestern University Libraries seek a librarian knowledgeable in the humanities and skilled with technologies that advance and inspire innovative research, scholarship, and teaching. Joining a collaborative team of librarians and technical specialists active in research services, instruction, and academic engagement, the Digital Humanities Librarian will support and partner with faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students on digital research and pedagogy projects, from conceptualization to implementation, and contribute to the broader development of digital scholarship in the humanities and across disciplines. The Digital Humanities Librarian will work closely with other librarians and technical specialists who support the humanities, interdisciplinary studies, data analysis and visualization, and digital publishing, while also collaborating with other University units such as the Kaplan Institute for the Humanities and Media and Design Studio in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences. Other opportunities of the position may include serving as a subject specialist and liaison to one or more academic departments.

Responsibilities:

  • Serves as lead specialist for digital humanities in Northwestern University Libraries, including coordinating relevant resources and collaborating with librarians and technical specialists from across the Libraries to support innovative research, scholarship, and teaching in the humanities and other disciplines.
  • Directly engages with faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students by providing individual consultations, group instruction, online guides, and other support services related to research methodology, technical applications, and other aspects of digital scholarship.
  • Evaluates academic needs in the humanities and collaborates with faculty and library colleagues to integrate digital humanities skills and practices in curricula and library instruction. 
  • Assesses current and emerging tools and technologies pertinent to digital research and pedagogy. Identifies and implements new methods and resources to enhance support for digital humanities.  
  • Cultivates partnerships and working relationships with other campus units, including the Kaplan Institute for the Humanities and the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences’ Media and Design Studio, and advances support for digital humanities through collaboration, grants, or other opportunities.
  • Contributes to the Libraries’ campus engagement and programming endeavors.
  • Depending on background and service needs, serves as a liaison to one or more academic departments or other university constituencies.
  • Serves as an active member of the Libraries’ staff, including participation on committees and other bodies as appropriate. 
  • Engages in appropriate professional development, continuing education, research activities, and service to the university.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution, or its equivalent. 
  • Academic degree in a humanities area and broad knowledge of the humanities generally. 
  • Knowledge of digital humanities methods and technologies, including experience with digital publishing platforms such as Omeka or Wax, text analysis and data visualization software such as Voyant or Gephi, programming languages such as Python or R, and humanities data processing and curation applications such as Excel or OpenRefine.
  • Awareness of current and emerging trends in research and teaching in the humanities.
  • Familiarity with issues of copyright, fair use, and ethical practices in research and publishing.
  • Experience providing user support in an academic environment through group instruction, individual consultations, or other modes of teaching and engagement.
