Clinical Librarian - University of Chicago

The University of Chicago John Crerar Library seeks an innovative, service-oriented health information specialist for the Clinical Librarian position. The Clinical Librarian is part of the Research & Learning Department and is a member of the engaged, collaborative, and supportive Science Librarians Team. Reporting to the Director of Library Research in Medical Education, the Clinical Librarian provides point-of-need services and information support to medical professionals at the University of Chicago, in the clinical setting at UChicago Medicine (the academic medical health system), and at other affiliated clinical and community sites, as well as students at the Pritzker School of Medicine. The Clinical Librarian cultivates partnerships between the library and assigned liaison areas in the health sciences through outreach, instruction, and research support services. The Clinical Librarian provides innovative services to support research, teaching, and clinical services of faculty, students, and staff.

The John Crerar Library provides specialized reference, instructional, and outreach services to faculty, students, and staff in the biomedical and physical sciences. The Biological Sciences Division (BSD) is home to the University's biomedical community, which includes 24 departments, 12 interdisciplinary committees, 16 centers and institutes, the Collegiate Division, the Pritzker School of Medicine (PSOM), and the University of Chicago Medicine (UCM). The BSD offers 18 PhD granting programs which are grouped into four broad clusters: Biomedical Sciences, Darwinian Sciences, Molecular Biosciences and Neuroscience. UCM, in partnership with the BSD, offers 23 accredited residency programs and many accredited fellowship programs within 10 specialties. The Physical Sciences Division (PSD) is home to the University's physical sciences community which includes 7 departments, 6 institutes, 2 national laboratories, and 9 research centers. The PSD offers 9 PhD granting programs and 6 master's programs.

Responsibilities

Provide in-depth reference, information, research, and consultation services for clinical professionals, including: physicians, advanced practice nurses, nurses, house staff, medical students, and users in the health sciences community
Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with clinicians and attend rounds, morning reports, noon conferences, and other clinically relevant forums in the early morning or evening
Perform literature searches in support of systematic reviews, research, grants, clinical practice, teaching, and publishing
Offer training and support in finding and retrieving high-quality evidence and the use of databases and mobile apps
Recommends clinical information resources to users
Identify, prepare, and present classes on various topics, including biomedical databases, citation management tools, and biomedical research strategies
Create and maintain online guides and other print and electronic materials
Participate in local, regional, and national initiatives or meetings related to health sciences or clinical librarianship
Contribute to the culture and operations of the Library by participation in Library committees, work groups, and diversity initiatives

Qualifications

Required:

  • Master's degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution or an advanced degree in the subject area with relevant library experience
  • Experience with databases and resources in the health sciences
  • Knowledge of trends and topics in clinical librarianship
  • Ability to work independently as well as cooperatively with diverse user groups to understand and articulate user needs
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, subject research skills and interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Excellent complex problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines

Preferred:

  • Experience working in an academic library or in the clinical setting
  • Experience providing reference, information, or research services for clinical professionals
  • Teaching or training experience
  • Experience performing literature searches in support of systematic reviews
