Internet Archive Surpasses 3.5 Million Digital Texts Online

The Internet Archive now has over 3.5 million books online including over 6,700 items digitized for the Archive through the CARLI Book Digitization Initiative. More than 40 CARLI member institutions have contributed historical out-of-copyright works, government documents, materials in which their institutions own the copyright, or have partnered with local organizations to digitize materials. All texts are available for free to anyone with an Internet connection.

Center for Research Libraries Membership Subsidy

In September 2008, the CARLI Board of Directors approved a partial subsidy for CARLI libraries interested in becoming members of the Center for Research Libraries (CRL). The subsidy covered 50% of the annual membership fee up to a maximum of $2,000/year for 2 years (through 2010.)

Purchase on Demand Pilot Project

The I-Share Purchase-on-Demand pilot project built on the I-Share resource sharing tradition by exploring options for providing ready access to recent monographs that were not held by I-Share libraries or that had limited availability. For this pilot, bibliographic records were loaded into I-Share for recently published items that met a particular set of criteria. When these records were requested by a library user, project funds were used to purchase the item and the item was rush processed and the request filled.

Five College Library Depository

All CARLI member libraries were affiliate members of the Five College Library Depository through an agreement completed in May 2011. Managed by the Five College consortium of Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke and Smith Colleges and the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the Five College Library Depository provided member libraries who subscribed to the digitized collections, access to the physical volumes of the journals the of the American Chemical Society, the American Physical Society, the American Psychological Association, and the Institute of Physics, as well as those journals included in JSTOR and Project Muse.
