Decisions

  • Minutes of the June 14, 2024, Governance Board meeting were approved prior to the meeting.
  • The Board endorsed a draft statement about the Importance of Academic Librarians, with final edits to be completed following the meeting. 
  • The Board accepted the membership application from the Henry S. Olcott Memorial Library, Theosophical Society in America. 
  • The Board approved the recommendation to discontinue the pursuit of a shared institutional repository at this time. The shared IR project may be reconsidered at a future date if a viable solution becomes available. 
  • The Board approved the formation of the Membership Fee & I-Share Assessment Task Force.
  • The meeting was adjourned at 1:26 p.m.

Announcements

  • The Board welcomed new Board members, Stefanie Bluemle (Augustana College), Brian Keith (Eastern Illinois University), Sarah McHone-Chase (Aurora University), Rachelle Stivers (Heartland Community College), and Frances Whaley (Kishwaukee College.
  • Jessie Chin and Sharon Comstock shared an update on the IMLS grant, “Libraries for Emergency Preparedness and Response in Times of Crisis”.
  • The Professional Development Alliance, of which CARLI is a member, was awarded a Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program planning grant to design, pilot and assess a BIPOC Leadership Academy for Support Staff (BLASS) library supervisors without MLIS degrees. 
  • The Digital Public Library of America is in the process of selecting a new home for their cultural heritage metadata aggregation project, of which the Illinois Digital Heritage Hub (IDHH) is a service hub. An announcement is expected this fall. Aggregation services will continue throughout the transition. IDHH will be represented at the Illinois Library Association Conference, and at the Association of Illinois School Library Educators Conference.
  • CARLI, along with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Library, has been awarded a $143,489 LB21 IMLS Planning Grant to plan a national continuing education program to develop academic library workers’ assessment skills. The Consortial Collaboration for Academic Library leadership Success (CCALLS) will be based on the successful CARLI Counts program for assessment training.
  • CARLI is tentatively planning for a CARLI Counts Cohort 6. The application process will open later this fall. 
  • More than 300 people attended the Free People Read Freely Symposium, a two-day event co-sponsored by the University of Illinois System, CARLI, and the University of Illinois Press. The event was held at the Krannert Center and I Hotel and Illinois Conference Center August 20-21.
  • CARLI and Ex Libris have reached an agreement to revise the contractual number of named users for all I-Share libraries. 
  • Five new libraries are completely live in Alma capping off an intensive 10-month project. The libraries are City Colleges of Chicago, Chicago Theological Seminary, College of Lake County,
  • Elgin Community College, and Prairie State College. The Chicago History Museum will join in 2026.
  • Alma Anonymization configurations were completed for all I-Share libraries as planned on July
  • 29, 2024. All user loan and request data in Alma are being anonymized after a retention period
  • of seven days; fine/fee data will be retained for seven years and then anonymized.
  • CARLI is preparing a special exhibit of the Illinois SCOERs OER projects for the 2024 CARLI Annual Meeting in October. 
  • CARLI is continuing to support the state-funded OER Grant Program. CARLI is holding workshops related to creating OER projects. The workshops are recorded, and after captions are added for accessibility, the recordings are made available on the CARLI website. 
  • CARLI continues to hold Weekly OER Grants Office Hours to support both the federal and state-funded grant programs.
  • Ysanne Johnson and Anita Sharma have been selected as the Building Diversity graduate assistants for academic year 2024-2025. They will complete their work at Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, Loyola University Chicago, and Chicago History Museum.
  • CARLI e-resources staff are working on the implementation of Consortia Manager for the fall CY25 selection cycle.
  • CARLI will serve as co-host for the International Coalition of Library Consortia Conference being held in Chicago on May 4-7, 2025. 
  • Registration is open for the CARLI Annual Meeting and Annual CARLI Directors’ Meeting to being held October 22 at the I Hotel Illinois Conference Center in Champaign. A virtual option will be available for the Annual Meeting. 

Tasks Assigned:

  • The Board will produce a final version of the statement on the importance of academic librarians. They will approve the final statement via email. CARLI will post the full background document to the CARLI website.
  • CARLI will send the final statement on the importance of academic librarians to the Illinois Library Association, Heartland Library System, and Reaching Across Illinois Library System for their consideration and endorsement.
  • CARLI staff will compile table topics for the Annual Directors’ Meeting and send them to the Board for input.
  • CARLI staff will seek hosts for the ACRL Roadshow: Assessment in Action.
