1862.12.12, from Southern Illinois Civil War (Southern Illinois University Carbondale) in CARLI Digital Collections
Apologies for posting another piece of correspondence so soon, but at not quite at the eleventh hour I decided to recognize today’s date with this week’s image: Here’s a letter to Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton from Benjamin Ladd Wiley of Makanda, Illinois, requesting the withdrawal of Wiley’s previously-submitted resignation. (For the papyromaniacs, it’s written on Owen & Hurlbut’s “Congress” brand.)
Was Wiley’s request approved or declined? Here’s the reply from Assistant Adjutant General Thomas M. Vincent.
