Discussion:

  • Subcommittee report: The 2014-2015 annual project report was published online on Feb. 22nd as part of the Cataloging News Column in Cataloging & Classification Quarterly v.54, no. 3 (2016).
  • Subcommittee report: Updating the I-Share document on cataloging e-resources: Last week’s’ meeting was cancelled and will be rescheduled.
  • Annual Project: Using MarcEdit for Database Maintenance: A Select Primer
    • After reviewing CARLI and Terry Reese tutorials, committee members discussed what was/wasn’t already covered and what niche they could fill. They reached a consensus that the annual project would include a good overview of MarcEdit, and provide two complete step-by-step demos with screenshots of the workflow for two relevant projects in our environment. The approach taken for each demo would differ, one would use MarcEdit to edit vendor records, and the other would use MarcEdit to edit existing records in a library’s database.
    • The annual project will reach all CARLI members, with I-Share specific information possibly shaded or highlighted appropriately to indicate the information that will be irrelevant to non-I-Share members.
    • Melissa will demonstrate a change for vendor records. Keith will demonstrate making an RDA-mandated change to abbreviations in author headings. Ann’s section on types of edit projects that MarcEdit is good for is completed, pending any future revisions of the final document.
  • Tech Services Spring Forum
    • Topic: New tools for database maintenance, featuring MarcEdit and others.
    • Structure/schedule/speakers: Ted Schwitzner can give a general introduction on MarcEdit. Another morning session tbd. In addition to discussing MarcEdit, other tools could include OpenRefine (possibly a speaker from UIC) and RegXR as a way to write and test Regular Expressions (a speaker from Wheaton expressed interest).
    • The title of the day will be finalized over email.
    • Location: Heartland is 100% confirmed
    • Registration announcement should go out around Feb. 21, Jen will draft a save-the-date announcement.

Tasks assigned:

  • All members: Identify forum speakers
