PDA: One is the Loneliest Number: DEI Perspective

Thursday, October 14, 2021 - 1:00pm to 2:30pm

Join us for a panel discussion where librarians share their diverse perspectives on being the “only one” or “one of the few” BIPOC librarians in their library.
These discussions will reveal their varied lived experiences while navigating in a predominantly white profession and predominantly white library institution.
During this important talk, panel members will discuss what support, if any, they receive from leadership, navigating workplace politics, balancing diversity work within their traditional job duties and any advice they would give organizations for future DEI recruitment strategies.

Panelists:

  • Michael Fitts - Assistant Dean for User Access & Diversity, University of Alabama at Birmingham
  • Melinda M. Livas - Student Services Librarian, University of California, Davis
  • Fatoma Rad - Acquisitions Librarian, Farmingdale State College
