PDA Event: An Afternoon With Tracie Hall: The “Real Talk” Edition

Thursday, March 18, 2021 - 1:00pm to 2:30pm

Grab your coffee and tea and join us for an intimate discussion with ALA Executive Director, Tracie Hall.  Tracie promises "Real Talk" and we are all in for her wisdom, grace, vision, intellect and insight about librarianship and about making life choices. Register early to make sure you have your virtual seat.

Here are just a few questions that will be asked during session.

  • Which professional skills and experiences gained outside of librarianship have been most helpful in your role of ALA Executive Director?
  • You have referenced life-changing advice from an early boss who told you that “if you really loved libraries, you should leave them for a while.” Would you give that same advice to someone else?
  • How can people become more involved in ALA in lieu of the pandemic and dwindling professional development budgets?
  • What advice would you give new librarians who are uncertain they will commit to the profession long term?

In February 2020, Tracie D. Hall was appointed the American Library Association’s 10th executive director in its 143-year history. In her new role, Hall oversees the oldest and largest library association in the world, made up of 57,000 members and more than 200 staffers. Hall is the first female African American executive director in ALA’s history.  Upon Hall’s appointment ALA President Wanda K. Brown observed that “Her unique combination of philanthropy and library know-how position her to be the leader ALA needs today. She is optimistic, energizing, and innovative, qualities that will serve the association well as it continues its investments in advocacy, development, and information technology.”
