Decisions

  • Minutes of the June 16, 2023, Board meeting were approved prior to the meeting.
  • The Board approved the adoption of the updated CARLI Strategic Plan.
  • The Board approved the Recommendations for Reparative Cataloging Work as presented by the Technical Services Committee.

Announcements

  • The Board welcomed new Board members, Carolyn Ciesla (Elmhurst University), Geoff Pettys (Southern Illinois University School of Medicine), Devon Powell (South Suburban College), Morgann Quilty (Parkland College), Claire Stewart (University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign), and Nathan Thebarge (Trinity International University).
  • The Board welcomed new CARLI graduate assistants, Amy Enberg-Aravena and Sara Mercurio. The graduate assistants will be working with CARLI staff the on the migration of new I-Share libraries beginning this fall.
  • Lian Ruan, Illinois Fire Service Institute, presented an overview of “Libraries as Partners for Emergency Preparedness and Response in Times of Crisis,” a program funding by an IMLS grant.  CARLI Senior Director Anne Craig will serve on the Project Team.
  • Troy Brown (IHLS), and Anne Slaughter (RAILS), presented an overview of the broadband and digital equity efforts underway at the federal and state levels.
  • CARLI will hold an informational webinar with WEST for member libraries interested in participating in a Shared Storage of Bound Serials The webinar will be held on October 12.
  • The “quiet pilot” for the Shared Institutional Repository project ended on August 31. Staff from CARLI and University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign are preparing for the pilot phase, which will begin January 1 and run through June 30, 2024.
  • The University of Illinois Press provided a Social Media Resources Kit to promote 39 ejournals that are now available to all CARLI members. The resources are available from the CARLI web site. The pilot program is a collaboration between CARLI and the U of I Press with funding provided by the University of Illinois System Office to help expand Illinois scholarship to more libraries. 
  • CARLI staff continues to work on updating the Host Institution Agreement with the University of Illinois System.
  • The I-Share migration of St. John’s College of Nursing, Illinois College of Optometry, and University of Illinois Chicago Law School of Law was completed in June. All are live on Alma Primo VE.
  • The migration process for the FY2024 cohort of new I-Share libraries will kick off in September.  The FY24 cohort that includes Chicago Theological Seminary, City Colleges of Chicago, College of Lake County, Elgin Community College, and Prairie State College is expected to be live in Alma Primo VE in June 2024.
  • The Calendar Year 2024 E-resources Selection Cycle is tentatively scheduled to be open from October 9 through November 10, 2023.
  • Sixty-two CARLI members contributed $238,000 to the crowdfunding for the FY24 Ebook Program. CARLI member libraries now have perpetual access to 7,628 ebooks, purchased through the program since FY21. CARLI staff are investigating the possibility of including ebooks from the University of Illinois Press for FY25.
  • Illinois SCOERs, entering its third year, has funded the creation of Open Educational Materials (OER) from 23 institutions. Several of the funded OER are being used in the classroom this semester. University of Illinois Springfield, Morton College, Olive Harvey College, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Concordia University, Parkland College, and the University of Illinois Chicago are all using their OER creations.  
  • CARLI has selected two recipients for the 2023 CARLI Scholarship: Amanda Helm, Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library; and Kaitlyn Mae Weger, Olney Central College, Illinois Eastern Community Colleges. The recipients have been invited to give brief remarks at the 2023 CARLI Annual Meeting.
  • CARLI is tentatively planning for a CARLI Counts Cohort 5 for FY25.
  • The Professional Development Alliance (PDA) has an extensive fall program planned, with events on topics including social justice, artificial intelligence, and ChatGPT.
  • The CARLI Governing Directors’ Meeting and the Annual Meeting will be held on Thursday, November 16 at the I Hotel in Champaign. Elaina Norlin, Professional Development Coordinator for the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries (ASERL) will deliver the Annual Meeting keynote address.
  • CARLI is offering partial financial support for the OEN Certificate in Open Education Librarianship and partial financial support for the Creative Commons Certificate programs again this year.

Tasks Assigned

  • CARLI staff will work with the University of Illinois staff to prepare for the launch of the pilot phase for the Shared Institutional Repository.
  • CARLI staff will seek stakeholder opinions on the e-resources brokering program and potential changes to the program guidelines and principles.
  • CARLI staff will develop a Board meeting agenda template that connects governance board meeting agendas to the strategic plan to priorities outlined in the strategic plan.
  • CARLI staff will work with the Technical Services Committee to implement the recommendations outlined in the Recommendation for Reparative Cataloging Work.
