Decisions

  • Minutes of the March 8, 2019 meeting were approved prior to the meeting.
  • The Board thanked outgoing members Richard Darga (Chicago State University), Cate Kaufman (Illinois Central College), Micheal Kott (Morton College), and Lydia Morrow Ruetten (Governors State University) for their service to the Board. The June 14 meeting was their final Board meeting.
  • The Funding Task Force was discharged with thanks.
  • Taran Ley (Southern Illinois University School of Medicine) was selected as the 2019–2020 Vice-chair/Chair-elect.
  • Appointments to Board Committees is complete. Board committee members are:
    • Finance: John Small, Fred Barnhart, Jacob Jeremiah
    • Personnel: Jeff Douglas, John Pollitz, Frances Whaley
    • Program Planning: Rebecca Donald, Pattie Piotrowski, Spencer Brayton
  • The Board extended the sunset date for the Open Educational Resources Task Force to June 2020 in order to continue to develop training opportunities for CARLI libraries and to keep abreast of developments with OER.
  • The Board accepted the report from the Institutional Repositories Investigative Task Force and accepted their recommendation not to proceed with procurement of any IR at this time. The Board is grateful for their work on this important topic. The task force was discharged.
  • The Board accepted the annual reports from the Collection Management Committee, Commercial Products Committee, Created Content Committee, Instruction Committee, Preservation Committee, Public Services Committee, Resource Sharing Committee, SFX Systems Committee, and the Technical Services Committee. The Board was impressed by the depth and breadth of the work of the committees. The Board thanked the committees and their staff liaisons for their excellent work. Announcements

  • CARLI will hold a Career Fair and Mixer in partnership with the iSchool at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. All library science students at Dominican University have also been invited to participate. The event will be held on November 14 at the Holiday Inn in Champaign. CARLI member libraries interested in participating may register for a table at no charge.
  • CARLI is working with the University of Illinois Foundation to develop a scholarship program for staff at CARLI member libraries who are interested in pursuing graduate studies leading to a Master’s degee in Library and Information Science at Dominican University or the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
  • Results of the 2019 Board election were announced. The newly elected members who will serve three-year terms (July 1, 2019–June 30, 2022) are: Spencer Brayton (Waubonsee Community College), Karen Janke (Erikson Institute), and Pattie Piotrowski (University of Illinois at Springfield). Taran Ley (Southern Illinois University School of Medicine) was elected to a one-year term expiring on June 30, 2020, to fill a seat vacated in March 2019. Directors appointed to one-year terms are: Fred Barnhart (Northern Illinois University), Jacob Jeremiah (Oakton Community College), and John Small (North Central College).
  • The Board meeting dates for 2019–2020 will be September 13, 2019; December 6, 2019; March 6, 2020; and June 12, 2020.
  • CARLI is nearing the completion of the Vanguard Phase of the Alma Primo migration. We are very grateful to the libraries that participated this phase. They are: Newberry Library (NBY), North Central College (NCC), Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIC), University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIU). 
  • CARLI will begin the Full Test and Implementation Phase on June 24, and will host an official “kick-off” webinar on July 11. The webinar will be recorded. 
  • CARLI’s Alma/Primo VE webpage is the go-to resource for updates, events, and CARLI-specific recommendations.
  • Alma and Primo VE training provided by Ex Libris is available to anyone and is free and online with no login required in the Ex Libris Knowledge Center.
  • CARLI is planning to hold events for I-Share libraries in late fall and early spring to address implementation and workflow issues related to Alma Primo VE.
  • The FY20 Selection Cycle closed with an overall subscription count increase of 3.5%, which is a 2.5% spending increase.
  • CARLI is continuing to work with Consortia Manager to develop the usage statistics module. Development is moving slower than anticipated.  We are optimistic it will be available before the CY20 selection cycle.
  • CARLI will be meeting July 10 with and advisory committee from RAILS and Heartland libraries to discuss a potential e-resources brokering program for interested public and K-12 libraries
  • Jenny Taylor has been promoted to Assistant Director, E-Resources. The Sr. Coordinator position has been posted.
  • CARLI has issued a Request for Information for a consortial ebook purchasing program.
  • Beginning on July 1, 2019, the CARLI web site will include a Board profile page featuring information about the members of the CARLI Board of Directors.
  • ILDS contracts are complete. There will be no changes in service for FY20.
  • CARLI is seeking sponsors for the 2019 CARLI Annual Meeting and Directors Meeting to be held on November 15.
  • Appointments to Board Committees is complete. Board committee members are:

    • Personnel: Jeff Douglas, John Pollitz, Frances Whaley
    • Program Planning: Rebecca Donald, Pattie Piotrowski, Spencer Brayton
  • CARLI has completed the standing committee appointment process for terms beginning July 1, 2019. Each CARLI Committee has been assigned a Board member liaison for FY20. The liaisons will keep the committees abreast of Board discussions and ensure that the committee work is communicated back to the Board.
  • CARLI is continuing to working with NC Live to offer a website template services for libraries that is built on LibGuides. A webinar about the services was recorded and is available from the CARLI web site. To date, 5 CARLI libraries have purchased the service.
  • Information about CARLI’s value to the membership was included in the University of Illinois System President Tim Killeen’s budget presentation to the Illinois General Asssembly.
  • CARLI held a New Directors Institute May 15-16, 2019, at the CARLI Office in Champaign. Eleven new library directors participated.
  • CARLI is working with the University of Illinois at Chicago and Northwestern University to co-host the Association of College and Research Libraries: Standards for Libraries in Higher Education Workshop at the University of Illinois at Chicago on October 29, 2019.

Task Assigned

  • CARLI will hold an All Committees Webinar on July 23 to kick off FY20 in a coordinated manner and to highlight the need to focus the year’s work and project around the implementation of Alma and Primo VE.
  • CARLI will convene a small group to refresh and update the Stratregic Plan. Board members Spencer Brayton (Waubonsee Community College), Taran Ley (Southern Illinois University School of Medicine), Fred Barnhart (Northern Illinois University), and John Small (North Central College) have volunteered to participate.
