Announcements:

Committee member announcements:

  • Mary Konkel shared advice from her seminar class. She shared that we are all doing the best we can, we are all busy, and we are doing great work. If we could have done it yesterday, we would have. So give yourself a break.
  • Sandy Roe informed the committee that the Dean at Illinois State University is retiring and is taking a new position at Appalachia State. An interim dean will be brought in and there will be a national search.
  • Cynthia Romanowski has had a book chapter accepted, “The Academic Libraries and the Academy: Strategies and approaches to demonstrate your value, impact, and return on investment.” This will be a case study on what to do with your technical services staff and assessing staff when work is low- shifting focus from cataloging to database clean up.
  • Ann Heinrichs shared that the Catholic Theological Union Library Director is retiring June 30th.
  • Mary Konkel shared that the College of DuPage is in the process of interviewing for the position of Associate Dean. As of July 1, due to reorganization, there will no longer be a Library Dean, just an Associate Dean.
  • Nicole Ream-Sotomayor informed the committee that the Dean of University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has been appointed as the Interim Provost. During this time, they will have an interim Library Dean until the permanent Provost is hired.

CARLI reports:

  • CARLI will be hosting a Cataloging Training on May 17th and 18th, lead by Nicole Swanson.
  • Nicole Swanson has been working with Chris Delis on developing new facets for the new version of Vufind, for braille and large print materials.
  • Reminder: If you are interested in submitting an ILA proposal, the deadline is Friday, March 24, 2017. The deadline for poster sessions is a bit later.

Discussion:

  • Subcommittee on Updating the CatER Documents Report
    • This is in process. Jen has worked with the committee to make small edits and she is almost done with this document. Jen will send out a pdf copy so the committee can conduct a final read through and check for formatting issues.
  • Spring forum – topic: Collections data analysis and maintenance
    • The schedule is attached.
    • All speakers are confirmed and have submitted their bios.
    • Committee members volunteered to introduce sessions and keep track of time for the morning sessions and technical services track sessions.
    • 61 people have registered so far and registration closes April 12. The venue holds 160 people.
    • Since this event is specific to CARLI members, the publicity efforts are centered around CARLI members and member institutions. The committee is encouraged to invite colleagues who may be interested in this event.
    • The meeting will not be streamed due to software and network limitations.
    • There will be a website available after the conference for those who want more information.
    • Cynthia has asked her Technical Services staff to function as greeters and directing people to Sherman Hall.
  • Annual project – working title: Getting started with Database Maintenance: using Access reports and other tools to analyze and maintain your library database (see Nicole’s mockup for web layout, p.3)
    • The committee went through each section to solicit comments. It is still recommended to reference any already existing CARLI documents.
    • The deadline for each section is April 26 (next meeting). We should have finalized our drafts in the different areas so they can be combined into the full document.
