Announcements:

  • CARLI Senior Director, Anne Craig, welcomed committee members and shared the following announcements.
    • CARLI Offices will be undergoing renovation, potentially in the spring.
    • Although staff do not yet have specifics on the CARLI budget, all are thrilled that a state budget has been passed.
    • Thanks to the support of several member libraries, CARLI has joined the Open Textbook Network project. This is a new type of endeavor for the consortium, and more information will be forthcoming as “trainers” learn more about our involvement with the project.
    • Anne is currently holding “listening sessions” with directors at various sites around the state.
    • CARLI will host an update session at ILA and is sponsoring a session on open educational resources.
    • The CARLI Annual Meeting will be on November 17 in Urbana. It will include presentations of the 2016/2017 annual projects and a look at an early draft of the CARLI 2020 Strategic Plan.
    • Four additional libraries will be joining I-Share, bringing that total to 90 libraries. The four libraries are Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, McHenry County College, Moody Bible Institute, Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies. A timeframe is still being established for bringing these libraries online.
    • The I-Share Next RFP is still in the hands of the procurement staff at UIUC.

Discussions:

  • Committee members shared ways in which we view/define resource sharing. We also shared things we are proud of in our own resource sharing environments.
    • This discussion revealed a number of themes such as:
      • Some members are seeing a trend in declining lending statistics
      • There also seems to be some decline in overall use of interlibrary loan
      • Internal and external communication of our services and other communication issues
      • Patron expectations for “immediate access” when using interlibrary loan
      • Purchase on Demand or other similar projects in which a library chooses to rush order an item rather than borrow via interlibrary loan
  • Discussion was used to inform brainstorming regarding committee events and projects for the year.
    • There was a general consensus to continue to send out monthly questions to the resshare-ig email list. A GoogleDoc will continue to be used to compile a list of potential questions. In response to positive comments, it was agreed that we should continue to send out a summation of responses at the end of each month. There will not be an August email, but we will plan to resume in September.
    • A number of Illinois academic libraries (including North Central College) have migrated to OCLC’s new cloud-based interlibrary loan product, Tipasa. Since this product will at some point replace ILLiad, it was agreed that a webinar sharing early library experiences with Tipasa would be an appropriate event for this year.
    • Open Houses were discussed. Reviews have been good from those attending, but attendance has varied by location. The committee will need to decide whether or not to hold any open houses this year, and if so select appropriate libraries. The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum would be interested in hosting if another library in the Springfield area can be identified to partner with them.
    • There was discussion of other potential themes for events for this year. Two ideas that emerged were marketing interlibrary loan services and trends in resource sharing. There was also discussion of whether or not it might be beneficial to try to partner with any other CARLI committees for an event this year. There is a potential presenter at University of Illinois-Chicago for the “trends” theme, as this person gave a presentation on this topic at the Great Lakes Resource Sharing Conference.
    • Eric and Thomas are exploring the possibility of submitting a Poster Session application for ILA based on the committee’s annual project from 2016/17. They will continue to pursue this possibility. They will be in contact with former committee member Marcella Nowak (College of DuPage) who was closely involved in the project and who is available to assist with a potential poster presentation. Amy LeFager is not able to help present a poster session, but she is also willing to assist with development of the program.
    • There was a very beginning level discussion of an annual project for this year. This will need to be discussed further at future meetings.
  • Brief consideration was given as to whether the 2016/2017 annual project should be presented as part of the Annual Meeting in November. A final decision will need to be made on this in August.

Decisions:

  • Minutes of the Resource Sharing Committee meeting were approved prior to the meeting.
  • The meeting was adjourned at 2:05 p.m.

Tasks assigned:

  • Belinda: Contact other academic libraries that are using Tipasa and compile list of libraries/staff  who might be willing to participate in a resource sharing webinar on this product.
  • Debbie and Lorna: Discuss with CARLI staff what contact, if any, would need to be made with OCLC regarding a Tipasa webinar.
  • Eric: Draft an application for an ILA Poster Session and distribute to appropriate members for review. Finalize and submit application on Monday, July 31.
  • Eric and Thomas: Provide committee members with links to all committee GoogleDocs.
