Announcements

  • Member Announcements:
    • Caitlin Archer-Helke (Saint Xavier University): Caitlin is now the Interim Library Director. There is a new Interim Provost and the search for a new provost is underway.
    • Krista Bowers Sharpe (Western Illinois University): WIU has a gateway period of remote learning for 2 weeks until 1/28. Faculty could decide if classes and librarian reference would be virtual for this period.
    • Chad Kahl (Illinois State University): Library reference interactions are 1/3 chat, 1/3 phone, and 1/3 in-person since start of spring semester. The first 2 weeks of classes are virtual. Classes are back to in person next week.
    • Spencer Brayton (Waubonsee Community College): The first two weeks of classes (through Jan. 30) are virtual. We will hear next steps for February later this week/early next week. Campus is open, so we have limited on campus presence for appointments only.
    • Arlie Sims (Columbia College Chicago): All staff have been asked to stay at home until Feb. 7. The library has been open. Faculty, staff, and students need a negative covid test to return to campus.
    • Lesley Wolfgang (St. John’s College of Nursing): Courses are meeting face-to-face. The nurses do have clinicals in the hospital.
    • Cynthia Kremer (Joliet Junior College): Faculty have the option to hold classes virtually for the first two weeks. The Library is open, and students use the Library to attend an online class if they have an adjacent in person class.
  • CARLI Announcements:

Discussion

  • Reviewed the Controlled Digital Lending Survey Results
    • There were 41 responses.
    • Most responses or concerns fell into categories: copyright, staffing issues, lack of knowledge about or technological capacity for CDL, and no concerns.
    • Those surveyed were most interested in shared experiences, a resource guide, and programming.
  • Subcommittee Updates
    • CDL – Interview Subcommittee: (Arlie, Ashley, Cynthia, Lesley) The committee reviewed the eighteen responses that indicated yes to the question, “Would you be willing to speak with a member of the CARLI Public Services Committee about your experience with CDL or your decision not to use CDL?” The subcommittee chose six to follow up with an interview. Only two of the responses had implemented CDL. The subcommittee will do interviews in pairs, and plan to have interviews completed by end of February.
    • CDL – Resource Guide: (Caitlin, Chad, Jessica, Krista, Nestor) The subcommittee chose topics for the resource guide: legality, copyright, licensing, making a case, how to, and case studies/white papers. Each member is assigned further databases or resources to search for items to include in the Resource Guide.  There is a current resource list in Box. All committee members are welcome to add resources.
  • The committee discussed how the work of the two subcommittees will be disseminated beyond the CARLI website.
    • Presentation/Open Forum –We will have an hour long presentation with 30 minutes of panel/case study discussion and 30 minutes of open discussion. We will frame it as an exploration of CDL, not a training. 1st choice date 4/22, 2nd choice date 4/29.
    • Online resource page will be added to the CARLI website and shared before the program. It will be framed as “this is the current research available” or “these are some examples of CDL”
